7 extraordinary things to do in the Maldives

ice skating in the maldives

The paradise atolls of the Maldives are famed for their glorious white sand shores, luxurious overwater villas and world-class spas. Step beyond the sand and enjoy a wealth of unique and unusual experiences that you might not have thought existed here.

1. Go ice skating

Yes, you read it correctly. Ice skating… In the Maldives. The Jumeirah Vitavelli is currently building an ecologically sustainable ice rink, so you can go from lounging by the pool to gliding across the ice overlooking the stunning powder white beach – a world first

2. Enjoy a round of golf

A popular pastime in Mauritius, a golf course isn’t something you’d expect to find on an atoll in the Maldives. Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa boasts the only nine hole golf course here, designed for the enjoyment of seasoned golfers and beginners alike.

3. Take a trip in a submarine

If you want to explore the marine life of the Maldives without getting wet, try a unique submarine experience on board the SUB-ZEN at OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo.

4. Release your inner artist

Water Villa With Pool

Take part in one of the art classes hosted by the One&Only Reethi Rah’s resident artist and try your hand at ceramics, stained glass and miniature sculpture.

5. Star gaze with an astrology expert

Find the Six Senses Laamu’s resident astrology expert on the beach and take a peek through his telescope as he explains all about what can be seen above. There is no light pollution around the island so you’ll have an incredibly clear view of the night’s sky. Each villa features its own treetop deck – ideal for sitting back, relaxing and star gazing at your own leisure.

6. Take part in a conservation project

Maldives Turtle

The Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu features the Maldives’ first Turtle Rescue Centre, in partnership with the Olive Ridley Project. If you’ve got an underwater camera and spot a turtle while snorkelling or diving, take a snap and share it with the team to help with their turtle identification work.

7. Listen to international DJs

Not just any beach club, Beach Rouge at the LUX* South Ari Atoll and LUX* North Male Atoll (due to open in spring 2018) regularly hosts international DJs. Party to their island vibes and various beats, from hard and fast to mellow and chill.
