USA Ranch holidays

Get a taste of the Wild West cowboy life on one of our ranch holidays. Guided horse riding expeditions will have you saddling up and roaming the rolling hills and wide open plains of America. Return to the ranch to savour the taste of freshly toasted s’mores over a crackling fire, a star-studded sky stretching above you.

Where cowboy dreams come true

Wherever you choose to stay on a USA ranch holiday, nature takes centre stage. Utah & Arizona are home to some of America’s most spectacular National Parks and provide the ultimate Wild West landscape - with dusty, scorched red deserts, dramatic rock formations and cactus-spiked mountains. The Rocky Mountains in the West provide a greener setting for your cowboy adventures, with lush forests, gushing rivers and shimmering alpine lakes. Visit the impressive Mount Rushmore National Memorial - carvings of US Presidents in the rock face - drive cattle, and spend a lazy afternoon fishing.

California offers a different style of ranch holiday altogether. Carmel Valley Ranch has everything from championship golf courses to a four-acre vineyard and bee apiary, so in between your ranch activities you can sample local wines and honey. Where horse ridings concerned, the ranch has a first-rate kids club so the whole family can live out their cowboy dreams together.

And if you’re after an authentic USA ranch holiday, you can always head to Texas, where you’ll explore the Texas Hill Country on trail rides by day, and listen to ranching tales and cowboy songs by the campfire at night. With wrangling demonstrations and opportunities to learn the Texas Two Step, this is a true cowboy adventure.

Horse riding

A trip to a ranch would not be complete without a good amount of time spent in the saddle. Mount your steed for a group trail ride through the rugged landscape surrounding the ranch, with a knowledgeable guide to educate you on the land and its history. Arise at dawn and take a ride as the sun begins to appear above the horizon. Return to camp rejuvenated for a cooked breakfast of eggs, bacon, pancakes and freshly squeezed juice. If you’re not an accomplished rider, you can take a lesson or two to improve your skills and confidence.

Ranch entertainment

Ranch holidays are action-packed - with real experiences of life as a cowboy or cowgirl on a working ranch combined with fun and games to create a truly memorable trip. You’ll spend the day watching the wranglers demonstrate their impressive craftsmanship - perhaps having a go yourself - and joining in with games like Western Bingo. Evenings are spent gathered around campfires, listening to the cowboys play songs and share ranch stories, and taking part in some traditional country dancing.

Kids Camp

Kids clubs

Ranch holidays are perfect for a family adventure, with an abundance of activities to keep the kids entertained. Child-friendly lessons teach kids the basics in caring for ranch horses, put into practice on guided horse riding tours. Morning strolls with an expert guide teach kids about the local flora and fauna, with the opportunity to spot some of the native animals. Interactive games such as horse roping keep them occupied in the moments when you’re sitting back and soaking in the views.

Dining at the Tanque Verde Ranch

Ranch food

Most ranches offer a full-board menu, so you’ll enjoy three delicious, cowboy meals each day. Expect to be served some of the very best of traditional, Western specialities, including epic cowboy cookouts where you’ll feast on steak, brisket, ribs, homemade cornbread, southern grits and an array of salads - all served with authentic entertainment and incredible views. Gather around the campfire to the aromas of roasting marshmallows (s’mores), typically enjoyed squashed between two graham crackers with a layer of chocolate for extra deliciousness.

Activities

Spending time on a ranch is the perfect way to appreciate the great outdoors and explore some spectacular landscapes. Lace up your walking shoes and take an early morning stroll through the wilderness, or pack a picnic and take a day time hike up to the mountain peaks. For a speedier adventure, hop on a mountain bike and explore the winding canyon trails. Many ranches offer nature walks as well as cowboy riding, where knowledgeable guides introduce you to the vibrant array of local fauna and wildlife. For the fishing enthusiasts among us, there are options to wile away afternoons by the lake, honing fly fishing skills with an expert guide. Want a spot of luxury with your nature? Head to one of the ranch and spa resorts, where you can spend one day riding a horse, and the next unwinding in a pampering spa.
