Another Great Stay at the Leela

Washington, DC

I previously gave a rave review to the Leela Palace a year or so ago so I was excited to be able to stay there again on my next (and most recent) visit to New Delhi. And I’m happy to say that the stay this time was even better than before, if that can even be possible. I arrived from Vienna at around 3:00 am because of a late-arriving flight. My luggage did not make it and I got vague assurances from Lufthansa that it was probably going to arrive the next day. I was met by the Leela folks at the airport, including my driver/guide/chauffeur/friend Kranti Kishore, who whisked me to the hotel, where everything was calm and serene. I was taken to my suite on the Executive Floor and was told that the hotel staff would take care of finding my lost luggage and have it delivered to the hotel as soon as possible. As it turned out, the luggage didn’t arrive until the second day after I arrived, but that was solely the fault of Lufthansa and the airport, not of the Leela as they had inquired repeatedly for information on my bags. If you have to exist with only one change of clothes, the Leela is the place to be as the facilities are simply outstanding. The Executive Club is one of the best I have seen anywhere and serves breakfast, lunch and canapés and drinks in the evening. I prefer having breakfast in a restaurant so I chose to go to the Qube, the hotel’s all-day dining place. The breakfast buffet at the Qube is delicious and the wait staff is willing to get you anything you might like – for me it was freshly squeezed apple juice (both red and green apple juice separately) and eggs Benedict. After my luggage arrived, I took a prearranged trip to Amritsar to see the Golden Temple. I specifically wanted Kranti to drive me and of course he was enormously helpful for the entire 3-day trip. Driving on roads in India is difficult at best but Kranti is always able to carefully navigate his way through the traffic and chaos. But what really stands out about Kranti is his friendliness and knowledge of the places we were going. No detail is too small and Kranti is always asking whether I need or want anything. [As an aside, I stayed at the Taj Swarna Hotel in Amritsar, which can’t hold a candle to the Leela in New Delhi.] When we got back to New Delhi, I had two more nights in the Leela Palace before leaving, so on one of the days in between I asked Kranti to see if he could take me to some private art galleries. Kranti researched the matter and found two with my exact taste in art. I also want to compliment the TPI Manager, Kamlesh Kandpal, who was very helpful and friendly. All in all, I recommend the Leela Palace very highly.
