Though incredibly diverse and comprised of a multitude of different races, almost 80 percent of India’s population practice Hinduism.

During Prince Albert’s 1876 tour of India, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II determined that by beautifying his city and painting it terracotta pink (widely known as a hospitable and welcoming colour), the Prince would be enticed to visit Jaipur. This would ultimately give the maharaja the chance to strengthen ties with the British aristocracy and establish a bond with Royal family. After a successful visit, the maharaja then went as far as passing a law to make it illegal to paint any building in Jaipur any other colour than pink.
