Governors' Main Camp

The heart of the magical Masai Mara.

The setting of the Governor's Camp is so magical that when it opened it was reserved exclusively for Kenya's colonial Governors. Nestled among trees on the banks of the Mara River, the camp is in a prime position to view its bird-life, hippos and crocodiles. An authentic safari experience, the canvas tents are luxuriously furnished with ensuite facilities and private verandas. From July to October the camp is the perfect place to experience the magnificent wildebeest migration.

Holiday of a lifetime

Milton Keynes, United Kingdom

We stayed in tent 10 for four nights from the 2nd September 2019, and right from the start our stay was amazing. All the staff are attentive, welcoming and friendly. Our tent was the ultimate in glamping, I have stayed in far worse hotel rooms, you get a comfortable queen size bed, a full bathroom including shower and bidet, complimentary toiletries and filtered drinking water and they are immacuately cleaned daily. Our tent attendant was William and he woke us every morning in time for our first drive of the day with tea coffee and biscuits, then brought us a hot water bottle at evening turn down. You have three game drives a day with the same guide each day so you get to know him and he will tailor the drives to suit you. Our guide was Bernard and he was brilliant, he was knowledgeable, friendly and went out of his way to make sure we got to see everything we could, and he didn't fail, if he is still there when we return, I would specifically request he be our guide again, he was so good. The food is excellent, and my wife was surprised with a birthday cake by a group of dancing Masai warriors during an evening meal. You have breakfast either as a picnic on your landrover on the savannah, or overlooking the planes in the camp, its your choice, lunch is in camp overlooking the Marra river and watching the hippos and crocs. Don't be surprised if you look up from your meal or drink and see a fully grown elephant walk by or have a warthog eating his lunch beside you. You are completly safe as you are escorted by guards during darkness around the camp. You should do the dawn balloon trip, its an incredible experience, you are sailing over the savannah and the tree tops, spotting the animals and then have a full champagne breakfast on the plains. Our pilot was Sean from New Zealand and he was great, full of humour and great at spotting wildlife, I did ask him if he had thought of working for a living and he said, "Not a chance", and I don't blame him. I could rant on all day about how good this place is, but if you want any advice, just go and try it, you will not be disappointed, it was the best holiday we have had and we will be going back.
