Little Piece Of Paradise

Bognor Regis

Recently returned from the Shangri-La Rasa Ria where we had a wonderful time staying in the Ocean Wing. We stayed in early March and would recommend these dates as we had no problems at all with overcrowding mentioned in the reviews. At times we were only ones in the pool. Food was good with plenty of choices and the room was spot on. However the thing that makes the resort is the staff. We have never met such lovely, sincere and genuine people on any of our travels before. They could not do enough for you and nothing was too much trouble. Evening entertainment was a bit sparse but that doesn’t particularly bother us. The beach was lovely from a distance but the sand flies and jellyfish meant it was only from a distance. But still this truly was our own Shangri-La

Package holiday, not luxury

London, United Kingdom

We stayed over New Year 2018 in the Ocean Wing which is supposedly more luxurious / exclusive (but actually isn't at all). This is no where near a 5 star hotel (more like 3 star package holiday). Pros - beautiful spot next to the jungle with wide beach - excellent staff - nice room with large balcony where you can sit on a sun lounger in the shade (thankfully as there is no space around the pool) - excellent food when you order room service Cons - When fully booked the hotel does not have sufficient facilities to cope. Even at the Ocean Wing pool you couldn't get a sunbed with an umbrella unless you went miles away from the pool under some trees. The normal pool for other residents was like a zoo - so busy with screaming children everywhere. No staff on hand to order drinks etc - The only activities in the hotel that aren't chargeable are water sports where a one hour slot is free, however due to the beach being too windy (which I imagine is the case most of the time) all water sports were cancelled. They even charged for a walk through the jungle and claimed that it was 'too dangerous' to walk without a guide (rubbish) - The 'free shuttle' to KK only operates during the day in order to prevent you going there for dinner (so you stay in the hotel and spend your money there). KK is about a 45 drive from the hotel. The hotel charge extortionate taxi rates - use Grab instead (equivalent of Uber) - The entertainment at the hotel bar was terrible, and the same women every night we went to look. The cocktails were good though - The WIFI in our room didn't work - eventually the staff gave us a dongle but this intermittently had problems. We also had to get an engineer to look at the TV which wasn't working - The free drinks before dinner were terrible!!! Firstly, you couldn't get a seat and there were screaming children everywhere. Secondly, the wine was disgusting. When I asked for an alternative wine the staff produced a NZ Sauvignon Blanc which was much better, but they gave it to me with a napkin wrapped around it so that other guests wouldn't see! It's a 5 star hotel - you expect all guests to be given decent wine - We had hoped we might get a premium breakfast in the Ocean Wing. There is plenty of choice but options stay the same each day. The food was nothing special. We stayed at a Kempinski hotel in Jordon the month before where the breakfast was fantastic and this just didn't begin to compare - Food in the restaurants for dinner varies - some nights very good, others just OK. The restaurants very much feel like your in a resort rather than an independent restaurant - There was an increase in Malaysian hotel tax between us booking and our stay. At no point did the hotel communicate this to us, we simply got an additional bill in our room with no explanation - The Ocean Wing effectively operates as a separate hotel to the other wing. There is nothing special about it apart from having a room with a large balcony All in all we were very disappointed with the hotel and whilst the manager did her best to make amends (for example we were given free return transfers to the airport) it just wasn't enough. As a result we have vowed never to stay at a Shangri La hotel again.
