Outstanding location

Christchurch, New Zealand

We opted for a special few days away with our adult children. We had been to Kota Kinabalu before; 20 years ago. This time we would have some luxury. We opted for the Ocean wing sea view, two rooms adjoining with twin beds and king. Each had their own balcony and a bath out in the open air. Views across the tops of the palm trees to the beach beyond were superb and the sunset was just right of of the brochures. The rooms were clean and spacious, bathroom was huge with all the usual amenities. A nice touch was a cotton bag to take your things down to the pool area. We stayed 27-31 December and in hindsight we’d probably try to avoid a busy time like that again. Whilst it is a big establishment the team there had trouble coping with the numbers. We opted for the seafood buffet for the first evening, nothing quite like a seafood selection. First available table was 8:30. It wasn’t cheap, but it was sooooo disappointing. Most of the food had gone, nothing else seemed to come out fresh and we were effectively left with the remnants of what others had left behind. It could have been so good. 😢 We tried the Italian restaurant one night, again, I think the numbers let them down. It was over an hour between us finishing our main course to getting orders for dessert. It was like we weren’t even there. Disappointing when we had flown our children all the way from NZ for this. The last night we went to the local Malay restaurant and it did not disappoint. We failed to live by our own mantra on this trip; when in Asia go for the local food. It was a lovely food in the Tapi Laut restaurant and some nights they literally have. A hawker style servery going on. That will be a must try if we end up back there again. Overall, have to say that the hotel did not meet my expectations on this occasion. The dining experiences let it down for me. The golf club there was excellent, Dalit Bay. Very helpful team and one key reason to head back.

Amazingly Kid-Friendly!!! Best resort ever !!!

What can I say?! Shang ri La Rasa Ria Kota Kinabalu has to be on the top of our list for the most fun, rejuvenating and kid-friendly resort/hotel we’ve been in! We didn’t expect it to be this fantastic! True to its brand, Shang Ri La delivered top-notch service and hospitality. We booked the resort mainly for the beach adventure but was kind of not sure if it’s baby-friendly since we have a two-year-old in tow. And we were so amazed on how the resort is perfectly designed to accommodate and entertain kids:) Let’s break down why we love Rasa Ria: 1. They have a Cool Kids Zone that resembles a pre-school! It houses a wall-painting activity area, reading area, film showing activity, ball pit, race track. The outdoor kiddie ply place is another one to cater to kids. They also invite kids to join the sunset ceremony wearing Malaysian national costume. 2. Nature at its finest! The beach is so wide that kids can literally play football on the sand. No wonder Rasa Ria allows horseback riding along the beach ( we’ll try that next time). The sand is light brown and powdery and did I say the beach is huuugeee and long?! Pictures do not do them justice. We have a lot of beuayifyfl beaches in the Philippines, too, but what set Shanghai La Rasa Ria apart is how the resort is perfectly located and blessed with mother nature’s wide and Long Beach surrounded with tropical rainforest. We watched the reddish sunset that’s one for the books. 3. Otters, monitor lizards, squirrels and monkeys by the golf course! For just about $15, you get to rent a golf cart to you around the 18 holes and search for the wildlife in the course. We are lucky to see them all. TIP: we saw the Otters at Hole 16, Monitor lizards everywhere! The otters are the most memorable for us! Be careful with the golfers though. My hubby knows how to play golf so we were able to watch out for fours! 4. Room and facilities - The resort lobby is huge with a high ceiling and shows Malaysian architecture including dark wood. Our room is huge and we were very pleasantly surprised that they have set up a day bed for us three aside from our kind bed. We have a veranda the goes straight to the garden. Beautiful. The breakfast area is al fresco and simply relaxes you, mind the birds who are ready to eat at your plate though. Fun to see! 5. Swimming pool- we are at the Garden Wing where is most likely made for kids. The pool has a kiddie area that’s just beside the cafe and Alice cream shop. Perfect for families with kids, we had lunch there and had some snacks. 6. Rasa Ria Nature Reserve- we didn’t try this since we have a kid but luckily our room is situated at the entrance of the reserve so we hear nature’s sound! Baboons, birds, squirrels beautiful sound 24/7! 7. Awesome staff! Everyone is just sincerely making sure we are comfortable! From the airport pick up to check-in, to booking our activities, to dining and even upon leaving. They rendered a song for us three! So sweet! Plus they allowed a late check out (4 pm) for free since our flight is at night! We couldn’t ask for more! Forgot to get the names of the managers and staff that helped us, Just remembered the resto manager Berry as one of the best. 8. Try the Teppanyaki Dinner! They have the best set and set-up! Book either 6:39 ok or 8:30 pm dinner. Our baby ate all that was served :) We are definitely coming back with the whole family!!! Congratulations Shang ri La Rasa Ria for a wonderful resort and staff!
