Very relaxing and peaceful stay at this lovely resort

Buckingham, UK

Originally we were booked to stay on nearby Gaya Island (possibly more upscale) but changed to the Shangri La as one of our party is vegan and one vegetarian and we thought we might struggle if the food at the resort was not vegan/veggie friendly and we were trapped on an island. Glad we did, as although the food was fairly good at the Shangri La, there was not much for vegans and we went into nearly KK for supper several times. Also, the food at the Shangri La is expensive; on Tuesday night there is an all you can eat Italian food buffet which I think is around £40 - certainly not good value if your only option is basically pasta with tomato sauce. Breakfast (included) was fabulous; foods beyond all imagining and to suit all cultures and tastes from cabbage/noodles to stands freshly preparing omelettes or waffles plus fruit, yogurt, meats, breads, cereals, eggs - honestly, too many to describe and with a distinctly Asian feel (not surprisingly really!) as by far the majority of the guests are Korean with some Japanese. There's a lovely sunset bar (quite pricey) from which you can watch the sun go down and a Chinese restaurant, also a bit pricey and not ideal for us as very little vegan stuff. All the staff were very, very friendly and helpful, the room very clean and large and the facilities everything we needed. Top tip by the way: a cab from the resort, booked at the entrance by the staff, costs 30RM (about £6) but download the app 'Grab' which is the Asian version of Uber and the price plummets to 9RM. You can't get Grab cabs to collect you from the hotel door (there's a security booth turning them away) but if you're coming back from town to the hotel it saves a bit over a longer stay. If I had any micro criticism - and I don't really, but for completeness - the rooms looked a tiny bit dated in an 80s way. Huge though, and immaculate, as is the entire resort. The staff deserve special mention for their friendliness and general eagerness to help. So polite!

Some mixed views

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

This is well situated - close to the airport and also a cheap grab ride into the city for markets, street food and cheaper meals. Also great if you want to go across to the islands - via their own marina and boats which are a reasonable price and well organised (provide towels and beach mats). Rooms are well appointed and fairly standard. Pool area is busy and no real quiet areas, with a kids area etc as well. Beach is somewhat underwhelming and small - but go to the islands. Breakfast is a busy affair -lots of choice but busy at the various times we ate, and with lots of families can be noisy inside. Usual expensive Shangri-La drinks - so stock your own mini bar from the town. Lots of rooms seem to have sea view and sunsets are great. Also fans on balconies are a super idea. I’d give this a 4 minus really if I could. Nothing really wrong with it - just missed a wow factor that I think the rasa ria has. See below. We also stayed at the Shangri-La rasa ria - go here if you want the feel of a higher standard hotel with large gardens and beach and more choice of pools - but where you are a fair drive from the town and captive to their meals and drinks prices, and more expensive activities.
