The housekeeping was terrible. Had to call 4-5 times just to get water. No housekeeping on checkout is ridiculous. Romantic dinner was arranged as buffet and multiple couples on a table. That's ridiculous. No sense of arrangements. Dinner was horrifble apart from one day. Not recommended for a leisurely stay. The location and pool area is good, but the staff is not at all friendly and i guess i felt a hint of racism too

Bad attitude

We stayed at the Ravenala on an all-inclusive basis for two weeks in November 2019 to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This is a holiday we had been waiting a long time for and were both very excited about our first visit to Mauritius. Although we ticked the boxes of fantastic weather and beautiful scenery around the bay, unfortunately our experience at the Ravenala did not live up to our expectations. After a fairly arduous experience at the airport and long transfer to the hotel, we were shown to a seating area in reception where we were greeted with a much-needed cool towel and a unique honey/lemon drink (not much to our liking). We did receive a warm welcome from the reception staff (lots of them around) but we did have to wait a long time before we were seen to. Eventually, Jason came over with an iPad and some documentation. We had to check ourselves in on the iPad. All details which we assumed they already had. We were advised our room wasn’t ready but we could use the Transit Room to refresh and get changed. Before we could do that, Jason proceeded to show us around the resort in our jet-lagged state (we’d just travelled 12 hours plus 90-minute taxi transfer). Although we felt awful, we didn’t want to be rude and took the tour with Jason. First impressions - beautiful yet bustling resort, not as quiet as we’d expected, lots of restaurants to choose from (we already booked a few before we arrived as we read you needed to do this before they filled up), big pool, superb weather. As we waited for our room, we decided to grab a bite to eat at the O Beach for lunch. Sandwiches, salads, pizza, pasta – can’t go wrong and our meals did just the trick. Jason from reception then found us to advise our room was ready and would show us there. Our room was on the top floor (as requested), was large and airy (lovely aircon!) and we were provided with some lovely treats on the bed (won’t ruin the surprise for anyone else). At this point we were very impressed with our suite overlooking the garden area, high among the palm trees. Unfortunately, our holiday buzz soon diminished. Summary below. - Annoyingly you have to provide your room number and sign at every single meal and for most drinks ordered at the bar. This is because not everyone is on all inclusive. A simple wristband for all-inclusive guests would work better. When we provided our room number at the O Beach on one occasion, we were accused of lying about our room number ‘it does not exist’. My husband advised he would show the waiter to our room if he needed proof. Embarrassing for all. - Our shower head exploded a few days in and rust coloured water gushed out. We called reception and they advised someone would be out to fix. We were in bed fairly early due to jet lag, and at 10pm the workmen knocked at the door ready to replace. We asked if they could return the following morning. They did and the issue was remedied but a farce. - We witnessed arguments between members of staff at O Beach. One waiter was rushing around tucking his shirt in whilst the chef and another member of staff appeared to be giving him a telling off in the middle of the restaurant. - When we left our loungers momentarily for lunch, one of our towels was stolen. We advised reception and they asked us to return it if it showed up. Another farce. We didn’t know about the deposit for towel rental until it appeared on our bill on checking out – would have been good to know at the beginning. - Housekeeping were ready to clean our room three days before we were due to check out. Reception had instructed them to clean our room. On numerous other occasions, our towels were not replaced and on one day, when we were out from 8.30-4pm with ‘Please make up my room’ left on the door, our room wasn’t cleaned. We had to ask twice at reception for it to be cleaned so that could make our 6.30pm dinner reservation. Farce. - Whilst taking our order at Kot Nou (our least favourite restaurant), the waiter’s phone rang. He said, “Sorry” – we thought, no problem – until he left the table and answered the call to then return to us about ten minutes later. We were left hanging. Must have been an important call? - Kot Nou wasn’t our favourite and we sent food back. The chef saw the fairly full plates return yet asked us if we could write a TripAdvisor review of how we found the food and experience. Well, it wasn’t good. - Ordered penne arrabiata at O Beach, received spaghetti arrabiata instead. - The sunsets from the beach are simply stunning. Some of the best we’ve ever seen BUT – you feel like you’re watching within a crowd. The beach, which is public, is simply too crowded. - More on the beach, it isn’t what we expected at all. Not white and soft, more gritty, brown and dirty. Likewise, the sea in the bay which you see as crystal clear in the First Choice photos isn’t that. It’s dark – and you have many sharp rocks to contend with as you enter the water. Go further out and you’ll find some softer sand. We walked to nearby beaches which had much nicer sand and sea. Most of the Ravenala resort bay is cordoned off for water sports (most of which are free to use on all-inclusive and something we did enjoy greatly). - Cleanliness or lack thereof. There are flies everywhere. We simply reached the end of our tether constantly flapping our arms to get rid of them whilst we were eating. We ate at all restaurants and they mostly showed themselves at Mozaik, the Beach BBQ and O Beach. Also, on the lounging areas near the beach bar with the swings. These areas can’t have been cleaned properly – dried on drinks and food are likely causes. We didn’t see much cleaning of these areas during our stay and when we did, a simple brush was used instead of thorough cleaning materials. You’d often find bird poo on the cushions and have to turn them over, the pigeons showed up constantly at the beach bar swooping in for scraps and at Mozaik you’d find birds eating from the buffet spoons. - On the theme of animals, there are stray cats and dogs at the resort. We’re animal lovers so not overly bothered as they were well-behaved but, for some, having these roam around loungers and sit at your side at your table while you are dining, waiting to be fed, could be unsettling. The dogs would often sleep under loungers and head around the back of the Beach BBQ to find scraps of food. For those having a romantic honeymoon candlelit dinner at O Beach may have their view interrupted by one of the dogs walking around or chilling on the sand in front of them. - As mentioned, the beach is somewhat cosy. The loungers are placed very close together so you don’t have much privacy and everyone is packed in like sardines – again, from the First Choice photos we expected there to be areas where you could seek solitude – not here. We spent most of our time by the pool, which on most days became extremely loud and busy too. - The busiest times at the resort were days of those visiting with a day pass. Flurries of people would be shown around and suddenly the lovely tropical resort didn’t feel quite as exclusive. A number of corporate events were held at the hotel during our stay too and it is safe to stay that these guests took priority over holidaymakers when it came to service. - We found the staff, excluding a few (noted below), considerably ignorant and inattentive at the restaurants and bars. The staff seemed to wander around aimlessly, ignoring us standing waiting for food or drinks, bypassing our table numerous times. We constantly had to raise our hands to ask for drink top ups and water. - Someone PLEASE change the soundtrack at the O Beach at lunch time. It is played over and over and over and over again and simply grates. Some nice chill out music would suffice. - Don’t sit near the juice bar on the beach. It’s a bit smelly there. Oh, and the juice drinks at this bar aren’t on the all-inclusive package, much to our disappointment. We would have loved to sample some of the fresh fruit smoothies but stayed with our carton pineapple juice from the bar. Before we found out about the supplement, we would often visit the bar to try and get served – the bar man was never around, always wandering off. So, when we did finally get to see the elusive chap, he advised we would need to pay. - We were excited by the street food at Taba-J. Unfortunately, this food gave us stomach problems on three different occasions. - Evening entertainment – not great and there’s not enough seating. Most people are still sitting in Mozaik to watch. The piano player was brilliant but he wasn’t playing for long enough and was hidden out of the way upstairs! - On the whole, the food is good at the majority of the restaurants. We paid to eat at the Riviera and Lime – well worth it. The Beach BBQ could be so much better but the strays, frozen green beans and birds eating from spoons put us off a little. - Plaudits to the following staff who provided excellent service; Pritvee at Lime, Venkamar, Ritesh and Kishan for drinks delivery around the pool and beach, Khushboo and Mamta at the Bistro and Gilles at Madame Ming. Jason was very polite and understanding. Unfortunately, the positives when it comes to service ends there for us. The other experiences with staff were borderline rude. Despite all of the issues, we still enjoyed ourselves and had a nice winter break but unfortunately wouldn’t return to the resort and sadly, are unlikely to return to the island, which I’m sure has many other beautiful places to visit.
