Mexico Holidays
From relaxing with a margarita on Mexico’s stunning sugar-white sandy beaches to being awestruck at the colossal ancient pyramids and temples of the Mayan civilisation, Mexico has more to offer than meets the eye.
The great thing about the Mexican coastline is that there is a beach to suit everyone. Whether you fancy a secluded spot surrounded by ancient ruins at Tulum, a laid-back hippy surfing hotspot at Zipolite or a family-friendly beach that’s close to amenities like Playa Maroma, Mexico’s beautiful coastline has is covered.
If miles (19 of them, to be precise) of pristine white sandy beaches lapped by the brilliant teal Caribbean Sea is your holiday must-have, then Mexico’s Riviera Maya will not fail to delight you. This stretch of Caribbean coastline off Mexico's northeastern Yucatán Peninsula attracts people for its all-inclusive resorts and long dreamy beaches. Plus, just off its shores, starting at Cancún and stretching south to Guatemala, lies the world’s second longest barrier reef, The Great Mayan Reef. Brimming with marine life, from manatees and sea turtles to the giant whale sharks, The Great Mayan Reef is a scuba divers and snorkelers paradise.

"Another truly unique holiday experience is to visit one of the cenotes in the Yucatán Peninsula. These underground natural, mythical-looking blue pools will transport you to another world. Revered by Mexico’s ancient Mayan civilisation as spiritual portals, today you can swim, snorkel or dive in their mineral-rich fresh waters. There is nowhere else like it and you’ll love them!"

"To admire downtown Mexico City from a bird’s eye view, head to the towering skyscraper, Torre Latinoamericana. Torre Latinoamericana offers some the most unrivalled breathtaking city views. While there’s a viewing platform on the top floor, just one floor below there’s a bar where you can order a sundowner and watch the setting sun over the capital’s skyline - amazing."
Events & Festivals
Mexico offers a huge selection of fun events throughout the year and you can plan your holiday to ensure you experience them! Here are a few of our favourites:
-
Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
You probably know the two-day festival of Dia de Los Muertos from when it was wonderfully portrayed in the opening scene of the James Bond movie Spectre. This annual festival each November is a unique Mexican tradition that celebrates love and respect for the deceased. Mexicans in towns and cities across Mexico take to the streets in elaborate costumes and painted faces to celebrate life. The huge street parties and parades are an explosion of colour, dancing and live music! Day of the Dead traditions include building private altars to honour the deceased using sugar skulls, and putting favourite foods and drinks on loved ones’ graves.
-
Festival de México en el Centro Histórico
Festival de México en el Centro Histórico is Mexico City’s biggest annual event. Every March or April, thousands of people gather in the historic centre to enjoy the best national and international dance acts, literature, film, music, theatre and opera performances. Celebrating the arts, this two-week event takes place in 50 different venues across the capital and is a not-to-be-missed date for your diaries.
-
Dia de la Independencia (Mexican Independence Day)
Independence Day is Mexico’s most important national holiday when the whole country celebrates Mexico’s war of independence that began on the 16 September in 1810. Events extend and take place over the preceding few weeks, with Mexican music filling the streets, costume parties, shows and exhibitions to mark this historical event.
Local cuisine
The reputation of Mexico’s cuisine precedes itself. From the tacos and burritos to the enchiladas, Mexico’s vibrant cuisine is one of the world’s most celebrated foods. So what better place to experience the treasured Mexican dishes than the country itself? The country’s long-term affair with chillies, herbs, fresh coastal seafood and beef serve up authentic well-known dishes we all know and love. Here are a few of our favourite less well-known Mexican dishes:
-
Tamales
Tamales are pockets of corn dough stuffed with a meaty filling. This street-food favourite is traditionally wrapped and cooked in banana leaves or corn husks.
-
Pozole
Pozole is a rich chicken or pork broth flavoured with corn, herbs, spices, onions, cabbage, radishes and, you guessed it, red chillies!
-
Chilaquiles
Chilaquiles is a fried corn tortilla topped with salsa, cheese and cream that makes a popular meal throughout the day. When eaten at breakfast, scrambled or fried eggs are added to the toppings.
