Not worth the money

Bogota, Colombia

My fiancee and I stayed here from March 5th to 15th 2019 in a Golden Junior Suite (building 8) and we paid for the Privilege Package upgrade for the duration of our stay. First the good: The resort grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The pools, buildings, and the beach are all beautiful. The main buffet and the beach buffet restaurant are quite good, with several options for freshly prepared food. Our check-in was smooth and the employees were very welcoming, for the most part. The privilege package gives you your own cabana at the pool or beach, and that is nice when the resort is busy, but it is an expensive add-on and the service doesn't always match the price. Most of the staff are very kind and helpful. The following employees were especially friendly and helpful: Elio (waiter at the beach and pool) Edgar (waiter at the beach and pool) Luis (young waiter at the Mar y Tierra restaurant) Raul (young trainee at the Le Marché restaurant) Jesus (bartender at the Indonesian restaurant) Ricardo (bartender at the Mexican restaurant) The bad: Our trip started off poorly as the private car service was not there at the airport to pick us up, as arranged ahead of time. We eventually had to call the hotel and they blamed the private company for the mistake, and promised they would look into the error. Terminal 2 at the Cancun airport is weird because once you step outside from the arrivals area, they don't let you back in, so we were stranded outside in the sun for over an hour. Miguel, the guy that checked us in at the Privilege Lounge, said he would follow up with his colleagues regarding the pick up and see if the hotel would offer some kind of compensation. We followed up several times during our trip and on our last day we received several emails from their transportation coordinator once again blaming the private company and denied any compensation (which we never asked for in the first place - their staff member suggested). The whole tone of the matter was rude and they never provided an explanation for the mistake (it seems clear to us that the hotel sent the private car to the wrong terminal but they never wanted to admit fault). The Golden Junior Suite supposedly includes a dedicated concierge located at your building that provides guest support throughout the day. After our first day our concierge disappeared and the office was closed with a note directing us to the neighboring building. We asked about the change and they said they had "staffing problems" and that we could go next door to get service. We complained at the Privilege Lounge and they told us they had re-assigned a staff member to our building, but for the final 8 days of our stay there was no concierge. We asked about compensation and we were told they would get back to us, but they never did. The internet at the resort is inconsistent and in our room it was terrible. This was not a big deal because we planned to disconnect, but even for brief, routine things it was a really bad signal. We asked at the Privilege Lounge and they said they would send a tech guy to put a wifi repeater in our room to improve the signal. They never did it and by that point of the trip we had given up on complaining. During one full day of our trip the buffet restaurants removed most items, including the fresh grill selections (one of the nicer aspects of the buffet is the fresh meat and fish they grill for you at your order), and the bars stopped serving anything with fresh ingredients (like no mojitos, for example). We were told that it was a health inspection. We asked around about why they had to remove items during a health inspection but no one explained it to us. We asked about compensation and they said it was a routine occurrence (once a month apparently) and they would not offer compensation. For a very expensive resort to reduce their quality to a 2-star level for a full day of your stay, you'd expect more. We also had a bad experience with the beach Privilege concierge Francisco (conocido como Pancho). Our beach cabana was never ready when we arrived and Francisco was almost always no where to be found. On our third day, due to a mix up with the front desk, Francisco changed our reserved cabana to another couple. He was very rude and sarcastic when we asked him to resolve the problem. My fiancee is Colombian and we both speak fluent Spanish, so language was not an issue for us, but Francisco was rude and sarcastic throughout our stay. The most frustrating part was that both the beach and pool Privilege concierges were almost never at their booths, so they weren't available to provide the service for which we had paid. A minor critique is the low quality of the a la carte restaurants. The resort has 7 restaurants that offer international cuisine, but the dishes are boring and poorly prepared. It appears that they pre-prepare dishes so they often come out cold. Even the Mexican restaurant didn't feel authentic or fresh. We stayed for long enough that we started getting creative and ordering custom dishes and preparing our own tacos at the Mexican place by ordering side dishes of tortillas and guacamole. The French, Italian, and Indonesian restaurants were particularly disappointing, serving dishes that I could literally make better at my own house. Bottom line: The Valentin Imperial is a beautiful resort that caters to older clientele. The staff explained to us that the management of the hotel is especially attentive to repeat clients, and many other guests we met were visiting for the fourth time or more (one couple proudly told us they were visiting for the 16th time). We have experience in other parts of Mexico and the Caribbean and for the price there are definitely far better options elsewhere. The poor client service and inconsistent quality don't justify the high price. We won't be returning to this resort.

Privilege package Problems

Edmonton, Canada

My wife and I stayed here from Feb 23rd to March 3rd, 2019 and upgraded to the privilege package. This was our second stay and we brought another couple to spend the week at this resort. We paid 8 nights for this upgrade. We arrived at the hotel checked in and were told to see the concierge at the beach Fernando for our Bali bed was ready to enjoy the day on. We went to the beach and spoke to Fernando and he checked his list and said we were not on it and didn’t have a spot until the next day and we could use the general beach area for the day. So, we did late in the afternoon I went back to the front privilege concierge after doing the math that I paid for 8 days and the Saturday would be one of those days. I mentioned that we were not given what we paid for on this day and I would like my $130 Usd back. I was told that isn’t possible and the would give us the Sunday that we were leaving and a late checkout. A customer relation person also came to speak with me. He apologized for the mix-up and said he has called the beach concierge to notify him and that we could use a Bali bed for the rest of the afternoon. As soon as we arrived back at the beach I was approached and questioned by the concierge Fernando at the beach to why I went up to the front and complained and now his boss is giving him trouble. I explained that I didn’t go to say anything about him that I went to get my money back for the services I paid for and didn’t receive. He was mad in my face that I got him in trouble. I asked him if this was going to be the tone of my holiday from him? He walked away. The next day we arrived at the beach and our Bali bed was there. Here is another problem I have with the upgrade and feel it is a waste of money. Many of the beds have broken frames and the mattress slant and it makes it uncomfortable including ours #26. Many of the beds the mattresses are water logged and as soon as you put the towel down and lie on it you get soaked same as ours #26. Their solution was to lie these hard covers used to protect the tables at night over the mattress and put the towels on top. Not comfortable so I found plastic garbage bags I put down to stay dry every day. This was our week then we come down on the Sunday our checkout day to which they said they would cover because of the first day missed and you guessed it not on the list again. Then Fernando says as a goodwill gesture that he would give me an open bed. I paid for it. It’s not a good will gesture. We spent the day and checked out and was asked how our time was with the privilege package, so I said not fantastic. This is when another customer relation person came to speak to us. He said he was heading to a meeting and he would look into everything and put together an email for something on a future stay. We have not received anything almost three weeks later. Do yourself a favor and spent your $7000+ elsewhere because if anything goes wrong you get nothing but lip service from everyone involved and once you are off their property not another thought because they already have your money.
