Itinerary Breakdown

Upon arrival, transfer to hotel and the rest of the morning is at leisure. In the afternoon, enjoy a sightseeing tour of the old colonial-style city centre, including the gilded Sule Pagoda, dating back over 2,000 years, and a photo stop at the Karaweik Hall royal floating barge. Proceed to Bogoyke Market (closed on Mondays and Public Holidays) followed by a visit to Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the world's most spectacular religious monuments. The golden dome of the Shwedagon Pagoda rises 98 meters above its base and is covered with 60 tons of pure gold.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Mandalay. Upon arrival enjoy a short visit to Saigang Hills to take in the panoramic views over the Ayeyarwaddy River, transfer to the Road to Mandalay berthed on the river at Shwe Yet village. Following a welcome meeting the ship will set sail. After lunch on board, transfer to short by local boat for a guided tour of the key sights of Mandalay, the city widely regarded as the centre of Burmese culture and Buddhist learning. Return to Road To Mandalay for dinner and local entertainment in the evening.

Join an early morning walking tour of Shwe Yet village which will include alms-giving to the monk by the ship's crew. Enjoy breakfast while the shop sails down to the ancient capital of Ava. Disembark for a tour by traditional horse and cart including a visit to an ancient teak monastic school and the ruins of King Bagyidaw's Palace. The rest of the day is spent relaxing on board observing the local river life from the top deck.

The ship arrives at Bagan where over 2,000 temples and pagodas are scattered on an awe-inspiring plain beside the river. A guided tour introduces you to the most important temples. After lunch you have the opportunity to rejoin the guide and visit the inside of some of the more significant pagodas. Alternatively, you can hire a bicycle or horse-drawn cart and explore this fascinating area on your own. Late afternoon your guide takes you to watch the breathtaking vista of the sun setting over the plain.

Early morning, enjoy an optional balloon flight over the Bagan Temples (available October to March only, bookable locally at an additional cost). Later start your tour by car to Dhammayazka, built in 1196 and the largest pentagonal-based stupa in Bagan. Continue to Lemyentha Temple, topped by an Indian-style aprx. Visit Tayokepyay and the Payathonzu complex (if open), a set of three interconnected shrines linked by passages and adorned with Mahayana-style or Tantric mural paintings. Nearby is Nandamanya Temple, finally, wander through the village of Minnanthu to see how the local people live.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Heho. Transfer from Heho airport down into the valley to Nyaungshwe on the edge of Inle Lake. En route stop at Shwe Yan Pyay Wooden Monastery. Transfer by local boat to your hotel on the lake. Continue from your hotel and travel by long-tailed boat across the lake to Indaing, at the western end of Inle. Passing through the busy village of Ywama, the largest on the lake, with many channels and tall teak houses on stilits, the boat takes you through a long channel where you watch the farmers cultivate their produce. Disembark at the jetty and take a short walk through Indaing village to reach the 14th-18th century pagod ruins of Nyuang Ohak. Enjoy a walk along a shafy path for approximately 30 minutes to the Intha villag of Sema, from here continue by boat downstream past Yethar village, watching local life on the banks.

Explore one of the 5-day markets (on market days only) to gain insight into the lifestyle of the ethnic Pa-O, Danu and Intha inhabitants who come to sell their goods. Enjoy a full day boat trip on Inle Lake, it's calm waters are dotted with floating vegetation and fishing canoes. See the lakes unique 'leg rowers', who row standing up with one leg wrapped around an oar. Visit Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the holiest religious site in southern Shan State, a silk-weaving workshop and a blacksmith's forge. In the afternoon, pass endless floating gardens, where fruit and vegetables are grown. Continue by boat to visit Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries on the lake.

Transfer by local boat back to Nyaung Shwe and then proceed to Heho Airport for your flight to Yangon. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and in the afternoon visit Yangon City Hall, the former Immigration Department and the High Court. Continue to Strand Road, home to the three-storey former New Law Courts, built in 1931. Next stop is Custom House, a large building with an elegant white tower and double-faced clock above the entrance. Walk past the red brick General Post Office to the luxurious Strand Hotel for a refreshment. (Non-alcoholic).
