Shongololo Express - Dune Express: Eastbound

When the indigenous people of the southern continent observed the first trains in Africa, the lines of rolling stock passing on the distant horizons recalled the profile and sinuous movement of a creature they called Shongololo, meaning ‘millipede’.

Recently purchased by Rovos Rail, the Shongololo Express is a First Class experience from Rovos who have an enviable reputation in delivering excellent service and attention to detail. Travelling comfortably and securely during the night, Shongololo Express trains save guests precious holiday time, arriving each dawn at a new destination.

Professional multi lingual guides are ready to take guests on inclusive scheduled excursions. Their experience and wealth of knowledge assist passengers to gain the most from each day's programme. The journey is all about the destinations and excursions with less emphasis on the train experience though this does not lessen the comfort and style. Meal times do not require a dress code and lunches are not included as these can be purchased on the excursion that day.

Guests are accommodated in smart en-suite cabins with double or twin beds with two historically appointed dining cars setting the scene for meals. Modern and traditional local cuisine is on offer with a selection of distinguished South African wines available. Guests can also relax in the bar car, small smoking lounge or the observation car with an open-air balcony situated at the back of the train. 

The Shongololo Express offers 6 routes of between 12 and 15 exciting days traversing and exploring South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. At 11:00 the train departs from Walvis Station for Otjiwarongo for our overnight stop. Enjoy the beginning of your journey and relax as the scenery passes you by.

08:30 transfer to a lodge in Etosha National Park and enjoy game-viewing activities. Overnight at the lodge.

Begin the day on a morning game drive before checking out and returning to the train. 15:00 the train departs for Kranzberg for an overnight stop.

At 12:00 take an afternoon tour of Windhoek. See the Trans-Namib Transport Museum, the Alte Feste (Old Fortress), the Evangelical Lutheran Church – a striking landmark – and the Namibia Craft Centre in the old Breweries Building. At 16:00 the train departs for Mariental for overnight.

08:30 transfer to Sossusvlei Lodge in the Namib-Naukluft Park. Visit the Sesriem Canyon, shaped over millions of years by the Tsauchab River. Overnight at lodge.

Take in sunrise from Dune 45 followed by brunch at the lodge. In the afternoon be taken on a scenic drive through the Namib-Naukluft Park. At 17:00 The train departs for Keetmanshoop for overnight.

09:00 tour of Keetmanshoop. See the Giant’s Playground with its 20km-long dolerite dykes as well as Quiver Tree Forest, home to 300 species of the Aloe dichotomy. 12:00 the train departs for Aus and overnights.

09:00 a full day tour of the ghost town Kolmanskop and Lüderitz, well known for its colonial architecture and wildlife. At 18:00 the train departs for Holoog for overnight.

09:00 morning visit to the Fish River Canyon, the largest in the southern hemisphere. 12:00 the train departs for Ariamsvlei and Nakop for border formalities and overnight.
