Disappointing - Not 5*

My husband and I stayed here for the second part of our honeymoon after having spent the first part in Mauritius. Upon arrival we were impressed by the Colonial style entrance and the exceptionally friendly staff at reception who welcomed us with a much needed drink! Our room was ready earlier than expected which was great. We were immediately given a tour of the hotel and given an explanation of the three restaurants. We found the timetable of the opening hours of these and which ones we could use/would be open/would have to pay for very confusing. Upon entering our room, we thought for a super deluxe room that this was disappointing - surprisingly small and perhaps a little run down. The balcony however was nice. Our first meal was okay but the service was exceptionally slow. We also didn't really enjoy the cats hanging around or the people around us constantly feeding them which we thought was rather unhygienic and put us off our food considerably. Service at every meal after then, whether it be at the poolside or the La Plage restaurant just got slower where I would just end up having to go to the bar to get our order in and our bill rather than being served at the table. As part of our honeymoon package, we were given a 'romantic meal'. This was just an average table in the usual restaurant with the roaming cats, same menu, nothing else additional just a plastic heart on the table, some cheap fake tealights and an unlit candle. We found it amusing more than anything else. Third night we were there, there was a wedding going on. The music went on until about 4am so we didn't really get much sleep. The last night we there unfortunately I obtained the most unpleasant stomach bug and got extremely sick. My husband therefore had to order room service. We couldn't at first order from the room as the telephone extension wasn't working. The wrong order then turned up to the door, missing a portion of chips and the food that did turn up was cold. I don't normally write reviews, but this was unfortunately very disappointing and I wouldn't recommend. Perhaps better service is provided for the French.

Nice but not 5*

We stayed here for three nights following a stay at a 5* hotel in Mauritius. This hotel was not 5* and does not live up to the LUX brand. The hotel is initially impressive, the colonial style entrance and reception are are spectacular. Unfortunately the rest of the hotel is poor in comparison. The other buildings in the hotel complex are tired with peeling paint, the pool has many missing tiles with a large number missing in the children's pool, the safety glass surrounding the pool was dirty and one had a very large crack and there were very poor quality sunbeds on the small beach area. Our room was small with no seating area, no iron, it smelt of mould and we encountered a couple of cockroaches. The food is also very expensive. We were half board but the pool side restaurant is pricey! As we were half board we assumed we would be able to eat at all three restaurants for dinner at no extra cost. This was not the case, the French restaurant is available at a discounted rate for hotel guests. We dined here for the experience but were disappointed. The food was not worth the elevated prices and the ambience was poor (there were only 2 other tables dining). The food was also poor at La Plage (and expensive, 33 Euro for a thin fatty steak and half a potato) and if dinning toward the end of breakfast/dinner in the buffet restaurant food was not replenished. If not half board I would eat out! The WiFi is also very poor throughout the hotel. We were perhaps treated less well than french speaking guests. Unfortunately a disappointing stay..
