Rwanda Safaris

Come face-to-face with mountain gorillas

Home to almost a third of the world’s population of mountain gorillas, Rwanda is a must for wildlife-lovers who want to get close to these great apes in their natural environment. Your challenging trek – along muddy paths, through mist-shrouded trees and mountain terrain – will become a distant memory as soon as you lay eyes on these large, gentle primates – a mesmerising encounter that you’ll never forget.

While mountain gorillas are undoubtedly one of the biggest drawcards of this small, landlocked country, Rwanda is also home to many other unique safari experiences that shouldn’t be overlooked. Highland rainforests and lush tea plantations offer a dramatically different setting to that of the wide savannahs of Kenya and Tanzania and, while you may not see the Big Five, you will spot many bird species found nowhere else in Africa; you’ll also have the chance to trek to see chimpanzees; and colobus monkeys, prevalent in the Nyungwe Forest National Park, can be spotted from canopy walkways.

The Akagera National Park offers beautiful scenery, from woodland and savannah to swamps and low mountains. Embark on a game drive and witness buffalo, antelope, girafffe, leopards and hyenas. Alternatively, take a gentle boat cruise on Lake Ihema and you'll see hippos, crocodiles and the many species of waterfowl that call the lake their home.

"If you're planning on trekking for gorillas then you'll need a sturdy pair of hiking boots – I'd recommend you wear them in before your trip so that they're really comfortable."
