Comfortable Stay

Johannesburg, South Africa

The Fortress Resort and Spa is located in south Koggala, about 20 minutes away from Galle. Behind the high walls, which shelter you from the bustle on the main road, you are welcomed by a grand hotel - a mixture of colonial inspired architecture with a modern / urban finishes. The hotel stretches along the coastline, with stunning views of the ocean. We stayed in a top floor ocean view room, with a balcony. The room was spacious, with a king size bed and en-suite bathroom, with a bath and rain shower (including Bulgari toiletries). My only criticism was that the room was starting to feel a little ‘worn’ (in terms of 5 star standards). The food offering was good, with a choice of 3 restaurants which cater to local and international tastes. The menu offered good value, and a wide variety. The service was friendly and efficient. Tips: - Catch a tuk tuk to the Galle fortress. The ride is approx 20 mins. The front desk can assist arranging the taxi and negotiating the fee. Although a little less ‘comfortable’ than a air conditioned taxi, it offered an authentic view and feel of the city - If you are a nature lover, stop off at the sea turtle sanctuary - where a local NGO rehabilitates and releases turtles back into the ocean. The sanctuary is about half-way between the hotel and Galle fortress Overall, we had a comfortable stay at the Fortress hotel and spa. Although by 5 Star standards the hotel feels slightly ‘worn’ the rooms are appropriately priced offering excellent value for money. I would return and recommend.

NO MAJOR FAULTS.

London, United Kingdom

I stayed at the Fortress Hotel for five nights at the conclusion of a private tour of Sri Lanka. This was the fourth occasion I had visited the island but had not previously stayed at this hotel. The exterior of the hotel was somewhat forbidding separated from the passing road by a high wall having only a central entrance in the form of a large gateway concealing a small vestibule at the rear of which is a partially open tall wooden centrally opening doorway reminiscent in many way of English prisons of former years. The key to its external appearance is given by the hotel's name as, other than a prison, the premises could equally have been an old time fortress. All that said, and once I'd passed through the somewhat forbidding entrance, the interior was quiet, with a beautifully maintained large rectangular garden formed of a well maintained lawn and some tastefully positioned tall trees all of which create a sense of tranquillity and, quite amazingly given the noise generated by the traffic passing along the roadway outside, benefited from the sound proofing properties of the tall exterior wall to the extent that the garden was virtually silent. The main reception area of the hotel, which is in an open plan style and affording a direct view of the sea on its opposite side, abuts directly on the garden and its imposing doorway. The check in staff were efficient and I was soon shown to my room on the second floor of the hotel directly overlooking the sea. Porterage was excellent and my luggage appeared in the room within moments of my own arrival. The room was spacious, comfortable, and well equipped. A bedside lamp was not operating which was soon repaired after I had complained to one of the staff. However this revealed that the room had not properly been checked by the staff prior to my arrival, a minor fault but a fault nonetheless. There was also an absence of any information in my room providing details of the hotel's facilities. The air conditioning was efficient but inclined to be noisy. The restaurant was comparatively small given the size of the hotel and, should the hotel have been full - which was not the case during my stay - and all the guests had arrived in the restaurant simultaneously, then it seemed to me that there would have been insufficient tables to accommodate all of them. Breakfast took the form of a self service buffet with an added facility to enable those wishing to have eggs cooked to any style of their choice. The food selection was consistently good and well presented. As I was accommodated on a half board basis I have to say that I was a little surprised at the arrangements made for dinner. There were two occasions during my stay when a buffet dinner was served and on only one of these was there a substantial and varied choice of food. This was the seafood evening which was truly magnificent. The curry evening was relatively poor with only a few differing dishes being available. On the occasions when we were obliged to take the table d'hote the choice was limited to the extent of being poor and certainly nothing like the standard consistent with that of a hotel claiming itself to be five star. The hotel staff were all smartly turned out, most of them spoke excellent English, and all were anxious to please. Of particular note was the attendant in the gymnasium who demonstrated considerable knowledge of the equipment provided and how to use it to best advantage. The swimming pools were clean and there were more than sufficient sunbeds on which to relax. The pool attendants were efficient in providing towels and sunshades. Access to the public beach was not particularly easy. There is a small lagoon like area of the sea having an area for swimming marked by a floating rope. This area is accessed by a small series of steps leading directly from the fish restaurant and, on one of the two occasions I used this access point, there were large pieces of broken glass on one of the steps in addition to some smaller pieces on the sand. I brought this to the attention of a member of the hotel's staff and the problem was soon rectified. It is equally difficult to access the large beach to the right of the hotel as it faces the sea. Again there is a series of steep steps leading from the garden to the beach the lowest one of which finished some two feet from the sand. It is also possible to access this fine beach via a narrow passageway situated at the end of the exterior hotel wall closest to Galle.
