Experience and insight into Sri Lankan Village life at ‘Iparanigama’. From lush green paddy fields to traditional thatched roofed mud huts, this picturesque setting is known as ‘Iparanigama’; a haven hued by the multiplicity of what this country epitomised. This old village has recreated both the solemnity and the exuberance of village life that once thrived with abundance. The outstanding recreation of life in a Sri Lankan village has been achieved with precision.

The simplicity and plainness that exemplifies village living is showcased in the reconstructed village. The houses represent the abodes of people of importance in the village, such as the village Headman, the blacksmith, the weaver, the potter, the medicine man, and the drummer. It offers a journey back in time as each dwelling has a scattering of instruments that had been used by these different occupants. The farmer and the paddy field were integral to village life and Iparanigama depicts the farmer at work in the field with buffaloes while the different tools are put on view. There are actual people who are standing by to explain the many facets of village life and attending to everyday tasks for visitors to observe.

Transfer from Iparanigama to Kandy and onto your overnight hotel.

Suggested Accommodation

  • St. Andrew's Hotel or similar

Have breakfast at your hotel before transferring from Nuwara Eliya to your chosen beach hotel, via Kitulgala.

The Kelani River (the broadest river in Sri Lanka) flowing through Kitulgala was the main location where the Oscar winning movie Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed. On the hill above this town, a prehistoric cave was recently discovered containing large middens of shells from some unknown civilisation.

In addition, you will be able to witness Devon and St Clair Water falls.

Please note if you are travelling onto Yala National Park for our Yala Extension tour, you will take a different route and will not pass Kitulgala Road so will not get to witness the Bridge on the River Kwai film location.
