10 Year Anniversary Trip-- Not luxury at all

My husband and I had high expectations for this trip. This was the first sandals trip we have booked and I'd say overall we were very disappointed when comparing it to our honeymoon trip to an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. I chose La Toc out of the three resorts in St. Lucia, based on the rooms I thought looked best. From start to finish----we arrived at the airport in St. Lucia and were directed towards the Sandals Lounge. Once you arrive at the doors, they are blocked by nearly 10 men in orange shirts who seem to be apart of Sandals waiting to help you with your luggage---however, do not be fooled, they are NOT apart of Sandals are are airport workers looking to roll your suit cases down the hallway a few short steps and then ask you for a tip. I had read this in reviews before arriving, but I had no idea they would be the men in front of the sandals lounge, literally blocking it. That was our first aggravation, because we could have rolled our luggage to the lounge by ourselves. (This also happened again at the airport when we arrived to leave St. Lucia and the men were actually extremely rude when asking for a tip when he didn't even carry our luggage). Upon entering the sandals airport lounge, you wait nearly an hour before the shuttles arrived to take you to your Sandals resort. It definitely does take nearly almost 2 hours to get to the resort because the speed limits are very low and the traffic is unreal. If you get motion sick easily, I strongly suggest taking dramamine before getting in the shuttle because the trip is ALL windy roads the entire way. Upon arriving at the resort, we were expecting the amazing sun-shining perfect picturesque St. Lucian resort, however the photos are extremely misleading. The resort itself is very old and is no where near as well- maintained as the Sandals Grand St. Lucian. (Since you are able to travel between the resorts for free, we went there for one day and were blown away by how beautiful it was...the only con from that visit was that it was extremely crowded on the beach and didn't have as peaceful a vibe as La Toc--and it also took almost an hour to get there). For the amount you pay----I do not think the quality matches up whatsoever. Checkin was friendly and easy as we booked a sandals club level room and were sent directly to the lounge for a private checkin. Our room overall (besides the tranquility soaking tub) was completely underwhelming and the photos again, make it look much nicer than it really is. We were extremely disappointed in the room service food....it was a joke compared to most room service you get at a very nice hotel. As for the beach at the La Toc, be aware that it is not a gradual entry into the ocean....you have about a foot of flat sand that is covered by the water as you enter before you suddenly drop to about 5 feet. Not that big of a deal, but slightly disappointing. The beach itself was very relaxing and peaceful and the chairs were very spaciously spread out. We had several waitresses that were excellent, including Yasmin. I wish I could remember the other names. The pool area itself is pretty awesome and they have constant games and music going on, which made it super fun. We did notice---and again mainly from a financial perspective in how much you are getting for your money---the pool bar does water down their liquors. You will notice the bottles have labels for the pool on them--and the reason we found out was we took a shot of tequila with some of our new friends and when the bartender attempted to pour them from an almost empty bottle---the GOLD tequila was clear. We asked if we could use a fresh bottle and it was the same bottle, sealed, but GOLD, as it should be. So I get they want to keep everyone safe and limit the drunkeness around the pool area, but I don't agree with spending money for watery drinks. We loved one of the pool bar dancers/game helpers named Shaquana?? I think. Not sure if that was it, but close. Lastly about the pool--not sure which genius decided to put TILE as flooring but they are silly. Both me and my husband slipped several times because of course it is constantly wet. We noticed several people slip as well. So be careful! As for the food, my husband and I are both excellent cooks and we love food---so I'd say we are kind of food snobs....our favorite meal was from La Toc, the French restaurant. We had the escargot, the filet, and I'm not sure what my husband ordered but everything was PHENOMENAL! All the servers were absolutely amazing as well. Kimonos, the hibachi restaurant was just okay when you compare it to American Habachi restuarants. We had a great chef named Razul, I believe, and he was awesome! The pizza place, Bella Napoli was pretty good...the Hawaiian was our favorite. We did not care for Pitons restaurant. The food was just mediocre and the service was extremely slow. The servers however, were excellent. Neptunes was also just mediocre but we enjoyed the view. The Pavillion had an excellent buffet each morning for breakfast with every food you could imagine. We also ate there one night and it was delicious. We did not get a chance to eat at Armandos though. A few last things to mention---my husband went down the hall right outside our room to fill up our ice bucket and stepped on piece of broken glass, which of course, cut his foot pretty bad. When a maid saw him, she told him to go to the nurses office where the nurse proceeded to tell him it would be $2 for a bandaid. Now---when you spend almost $6000 on a vacation, you would think a bandaid would be free. That was extremely upsetting to us. However, the resort did call our room a couple of times to check on how he was doing. The cat issue you will read about is not as big of a deal as some have made it sound. There are cats roaming around each restaurant, but they do not bother you or scratch you. However, I will say they are not friendly...so don't try to pet them. I saw one woman try to and it swatted at her faster than lightening. Birds do fly through all the restaurants, so cleanliness was a concern a few times, but never a problem for us. As for the attitudes of the employees, overall I was disappointed. I am a big customer service person and it made me sad and frustrated to see so many employees there seemed miserable and you almost felt bad for needing anything or asking for anything. There were some though, that were super cheerful and happy and accommodating, but I wish that on an anniversary trip, I didn't feel like I was burdening anyone to do their job. We will not be returning. If we ever did return to St. Lucia, I would most definitely choose the Grande. Last but not least, We did the Pitons Sunset Cruise and it was so fun! It was definitely long but we thoroughly enjoyed it. I totally recommend it.

Honeymoon to Remember

Destin, Florida

My husband and I booked this trip a year in advance and couldn't wait to get there. After reading some of the other reviews we had a few concerns, but we both work in hospitality so we know the drill when it comes to reviews. We booked the Piton Oceanview Two Story Butler Veranda Suite and the view was beautiful. The room was very nice, well kept and very clean. The best part of the entire room is the balcony, we sat outside every chance we could. Some may think the room is slightly dated, but the resort is more of a bed and breakfast type feel. If you expect to get a brand new modern room then you will be disappointed. We did have butler service and though we did not utilize them as much as others, they were amazing. Labon, Levester, and Marcus are an incredible team and I was blown away with their customer service. Their professionalism and attention to detail was exceptional and should be recognize for their service. I would love to have them come work at my hotel because they went above and beyond and are a true asset to the resort. Our housekeeper did a wonderful job and our room was always perfectly cleaned. In regards to the food, La Toc was our best meal and everything else was just alright. I will admit I am a bit of a food snob so I have very high expectations. The pool area was a blast and there was always something going on. I recommend going to the Piano Bar because Lucas the bartender is unreal. He not only makes a great drink, but he can sing!!! Also, the cats are NOT an issue at all. So many reviews make it seem like they are all over the place, FALSE. Yes, there are cats around the resort, but they do not bother you at all and at any given time you might see one or two if that. The resort has hills and lots of stairs. If you are not fit I would recommend getting the butler service to drive you in the golf cart. My husband and I walked to every place and it was not an issue. My two issues about the entire trip. The first thing is that they need air conditioning in the pub because it gets way to hot and it becomes so uncomfortable a lot of people left. The second thing is the spa services. I had a massage and facial that were both wonderful, but as soon as my services were finished they tried to sell me product. I was still laying on the table and it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Small side note, before you book an excursion make sure a cruise ship isn't in port the same day. Overall, wonderful honeymoon, so thank you.
