Remote island paradise

London, United Kingdom

We stayed at Fundu for 7 nights after safari, as part of our 3 week honeymoon trip to Tanzania. Pemba Island is completely different to Zanzibar and we are so pleased that we decided to visit, and to stay at Fundu. It really is a hidden paradise and made even more special by the journey to get there - on a 12-seater plane and then speed boat, which I expect thankfully deters a lot of tourists! The resort itself is designed beautifully and, though it is not large in terms of numbers of rooms, the lodges are spread out over a large area, allowing peace and privacy for those that want it. Despite its size, the resort is secluded and blends beautifully with the landscape on the island, so that you would hardly know it is there when approaching by boat. The team at Fundu are all so friendly and make a huge effort to welcome you to the island. Being just before peak season, the hotel wasn't full when we were there and so we were really thrilled to be upgraded to the gigantic Jungle Suite, complete with its own private plunge pool! But this was just the start of the incredible efforts from the team to make our stay perfect. Friends had organised a couple of excursions for us as a wedding present, including a sunset dhow boat cruise, but some unusually windy weather during our visit and an issue with one of the boats, had meant that it was looking like we might not get the chance to go out. However, the manager Tristan went to huge efforts to find us another boat, in the end actually swimming round the coast himself to speak to the local fishermen and borrow one of their boats for us! The sunset cruise was so special and, to top it off, the team had also arranged a lovely candlelit dinner on the beach for us when we returned. Overall the food was excellent and we especially enjoyed the fresh seafood, fruit and variety of desserts. There are lots of activities and excursions available at Fundu and we would highly recommend doing a trip to Misali island. It is just breath-takingly beautiful and we went out twice to snorkel, see dolphins and just spend a few hours just enjoying the stunning beach. Not that a massage is needed to feel extremely relaxed at Fundu, but Olivia the masseuse was fantastic and is definitely worth visiting. It is also worth reading the story of the hotel (there is a book in each lodge), and the years of work that went into developing it, to really appreciate what a privilege it is to stay in this far-flung and unique place. All in all, we had an incredible stay and cannot recommend Fundu Lagoon enough for anyone who is looking for an island paradise off the beaten track. We hope to return one day!

Breathtaking, magical hideaway

Our amazing African adventure included 7 nights at the magical Fundu Lagoon. A very memorable experience. From the James Bond style arrival, speeding towards your own tropical island to the picture perfect sunsets enjoyed whilst sipping cocktails at the jetty bar. The lodge blends seamlessly into the local landscape and why would you want to detract from the sun-kissed sands, edged by palm trees looking out on crystal clear seas. All staff contribute to the relaxed, friendly atmosphere and Tristan and Georgie, the managers, go above and beyond to ensure your every need is met. Our trip to Masali Island with Mede and Abdhi for the snorkelling was incredible, as was our expedition to the local village to see the flying foxes and to enjoy the bird life whilst gently drifting through the mangrove lagoons. We saw dolphins playing in the early morning and had fun paddle boarding and kayaking. There was also plenty of time for reading and relaxing - a particular big thank you to Olivia for her deeply relaxing Balinese massage. The food was delicious - we particularly enjoyed the candlelight beachside barbecue under a sky full of stars. Moreover, we like the relationship Fundu has with its local community, providing educational, medical and practical support as well as a philosophy of employing and sourcing locally wherever possible. Guests can contribute to their community welfare project if they so wish. Thank you all for making our visit to you so special. Asante Sana.
