Best location in Zanzibar

Sao Paulo, SP

We spent 8 nights at this gorgeous resort, including New Year´s. The hotel is located on the nicest stretch of sand of the island. The west coast is not really affected by the tide so you can go for a swim anytime. Our room was really spacious, on the upper floor of Block B. Huge bath tub! No complaints about the room at all. My only complaints are about cleanliness around the beach chairs. Every morning we would find empty bottles and cigarette butts around from the day before. Also, I suggest you improve the offer of snacks and cocktails. There was just popcorn available at the beach bar and a limited choice of free drinks, even on the all inclusive plan, and it was always impossible to get a cold bottle of beer. I had to take them to the room to chill in the fridge there. I found that rather frustrating given how much we were paying to stay at the resort. Anyway, on a positive note I would also like to add that the highlight of the hotel is the staff. They always greeted us with a warm "jambo" and a smile making us feel very welcome!

Amazing New Years Eve buffet on the beach

Toronto

Considering that this is Africa and abviously one can not expect North American customer service standard, I would say that everyone is trying to do their best to make you happy. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are beautiful as well. I will not complain that we didn’t get our requested block A (almost 1 year in advance, I might add), because we found the location of our rooms to be ok, although I could see how incredible the views could be from the rooms in black A. The beach is spectacular and the low tide does not influence one being able to go in the ocean. The “beach boys” could be annoying and that is a big downside of the beaches in Zanzibar - I have read about it before hand and I was not surprised to see that it is just so, unfortunately. The food at the buffet is very good in the morning, lunch and diner. Food at the Samaki Restaurant is a different story all together. Reading that this was a seafood restaurant I could not wait to go and experience some amazing fresh seafood and was ready to go and pay for it a few nights, if not all of our stay. So the first night we got a reservation and went to try the menu that is actually included in the all inclusive plan (my understanding is that you can do that once per stay). I was trying very much not to feel insulted when I was presented with something that they called fresh fish, but it was only something resembling a fish, fried until being dry like a cardboard, not bigger that 8-10 cm and abviously, full of bones. I could not even look at the plate and just went to sleep as we had traveled from the Serengeti on that day. I am sorry to say that I was actually sick the next day and could not even think of food, having just toast and tea throughout the day. And then New Years Eve came! And the display of food and art (sculptured cakes and fruits and what not) took my breath away. I don’t think I have ever seen something even remotely comparable. I had a chance the day before to meet chef Yusuf and on that night I looked for him and congratulated him for such an amazing extravagant food display. He thanked me politely and you could tell how proud he was to hear my compliments. Conclusion is that if one is going there with an open mind about the side of the world you are in, this resort is a very good place to be in Zanzibar, but please, do avoid Samaki restaurant!
