Business not pleasure

London, United Kingdom

Tricky review this, as I normally stay at the Oriental which is being refurbished. This is nowhere compared to the Oriental but to be fair a third of the price. I have tried to remember that. First thing is I have scored it 4 but it’s probably 3.5 (good). As a business hotel it’s fine. The hotel is vast and the indoor public areas and bars are quite impressive. It does however, come across a little bit like an airport hotel in Hounslow. Very sterile for Thailand. I stayed for 4 nights and although the weather was wet did get a bit of pool time. The pool area and bar feels a little dated. Maybe it’s the orange, green and brown colour scheme but it could do with a bit of love putting into it. Pool staff were very friendly though. Rest of the staff were just ok by Thai standards. I can report however that the gym is amazingly good. Tons of equipment. It’s a bit of a walk and even further to the spa although they do offer a one hour Thai massage in a poolside canopy for hardly any money at all. I had one which was brilliant. The location is great on the mighty River but two issues here. Firstly, there is a serious amount of building work going on next door and the hotel itself. It’s very noisy during the day. Secondly, the hotel has a jetty but no boat. I thought all the hotels on the river had boats? It means a bit of a walk to Sathon Taksin pier which is always busy. The bedroom was plenty large enough but again the decor a little drab and appliances dated. Comfy bed though. The choice at breakfast is vast but I think in some areas the quality of ingredients could be improved. Overall though a good place for a business stay but I wouldn’t personally stay there for a holiday.

Golden birdcage afternoon tea

Vietnam

A friend and I went to the Shangri La for their wonderful Golden Birdcage afternoon tea. If it is very hot weather do not sit by the window as the heat will force you to change tables, as we did. The selection of goodies really was served in a golden birdcage which the staff wheeled to our table. There was a very good selection of sweet and savory treats and we couldn't finish them all. But they did parcel up what we couldn't eat and we took them home. There was a wonderful harpist playing just the right kind of music for an afternoon tea. You will need to book as it is very popular. It was my birthday and the staff brought out a little strawberry cake with one candle and sang Happy Birthday to a harp accompaniment. A wonderfully relaxing afternoon.
