A fabulous experience

Beaconsfield, United Kingdom

This was a special stay that we had wanted to do for some time. On arrival we were helped to choose and schedule 3 activities each and then shown to our room, 216. Almost at the end of a long run of rooms and high up, the view was impressive and we could see a large part of the land, varying from open areas, a large pond, small scrubland and could make out a few of the elephants eating or just chilling. We chose the culinary experience as one of our activities and this involved an early morning visit with the head chef to the market to purchase vegetables, noodles and spices. On our return we prepared and cooked our own 3 part lunch following demonstrations from the head chef (it felt a bit like MasterChef!) The cooking school is very professional with 4 complete separate cooking stations facing chef's own cooking area. The cooking session and lunch ended about 1.30 and was great fun and very informative. We also came away with many recipes on a memory stick. For another of the actvities we chose to have complimentary treatments in the Spa which were very good and highly professional. The last of our activities was the elephant learning experience which involved a short lecture about elephants and their behaviours and the highlight was getting up close to 'Da' and 'Pompoi', two of the elephants and feeding them bamboo grass and sugar cane. It was magical. The service, the food and drink and the whole environment was really excellent. Two small comments though. We stayed in a Three Country View room which had great hanging space in the wardrobe but little other storage which meant that our cases were open on the floor for the length of our stay. The bathroom has glass partitioning on 2 sides, not to everyone's liking with limited privacy. This resort is an expensive luxury resort and some extra investment in the bathroom and room furniture would bring the rooms up to the excellent standards throughout.

Unlike any other hotel

The property is a spectacular compound of wooden structures set high up in the country and bush. It is about an hour's drive from the Chiang Rai airport. We were there on an inclusive package that included food and drink and some activities such as strolling with elephants, cooking, and spa treatments. The dining was quite good. Breakfast and lunch buffets occur on a spacious patio with broad views of the country and its elephants. Dinners are done in two areas, one for a Thai menu and the other for an Italian menu. The emphasis here is on relaxing more than touring.
