Great hotel to get away from it all

We stayed at the Apsara between 10-17 June 2017 as part of a twin location holiday, here and Phuket. First impressions after a poxy 16 hour flight then a 1.5 hour bus trip were bang on. The staff there could not be more friendly, and greeted the three of us like old friends despite never having visited before. We were given a welcome drink and a cooling towel (VERY gratefully received after the long journey!) and all our luggage was labelled ready to be taken to the room. We were given our 'briefing pack' with the hotel layout etc and issued with our all inclusive bands for the duration of our trip. We were told the room would be ready as soon as they could finish preparing it so we went and got a very quick drink in the bar near the beach before being given our key and taken to the room. Bags arrived with us and we were left in peace very quickly. We were near the river just across from the villa part of the resort and we were really happy with the view and the standard of room. We had been upgraded to a superior family room and before we went we were offered a fairly decent price to upgrade to the villa area but thought we couldn't justify the extra added fee after the initial holiday cost. Although the villa area was really nice (better than the standard area), we didn't feel we'd missed out on anything but not upgrading. That said, we went on several trips during our time here so spent little time at the hotel during the day. If you are planning on staying at the resort for most of your holiday, then you may want to think about upgrading for the privacy aspect and more peaceful surroundings. The room itself was a short walk from reception and on the first floor. It was in excellent condition, well cleaned every day and had no faults. The air con worked perfectly (which you will need, it was really hot and sticky in Thailand in June) and the bathroom had a fully working shower and bath. The only thing I found with the bathroom was the very small step down into the room from the hallway part. I guess this is to prevent water running out in to the room if anything overflows, BUT! its a pain in the middle of the night when you are half asleep and the lights are off. My toe still bears the scars... As some others have mentioned, the big open view in to the room was a little odd, but the large blind pulled down means you can keep your privacy. The resort was really quiet when we were there with very few people there at all. I can imagine this place must get busy during high season but it was SOOO peaceful when we were there. The breakfast was excellent, with plenty to choose from and all options catered for. I was eating various Thai dishes for breakfast which did feel strange but the quality was too nice to turn down. We ate here every day. The all inclusive option was a bit difficult to grasp at first, with you not being able to get drinks at Zeus bar during the day unless you are eating there. Not much of a problem as the main bar is only a 20 second walk away but we couldn't understand why they didn't allow us to order from any open bar?! The food in the evening was also amazing. There was a fixed menu to choose from rather than buffet but there was loads of choices. My fussy son was kept happy and tried a lot of the things from it. I can recommend the fishcakes and the tenderloin steak. Once I found that it was hard to want to try anything else, it was that good! You can also eat in the restaurant in the villa area which specialises in Italian which we tried. The walk over the bridge was nice and the whole resort looked lovely with the lights at night. Only gripe with that restaurant was it was really hot, much hotter than the other two but this may well have just been the night we went there. Watching the tiny lizards running up and down the walls was fun to watch too. :-) We never visited the spa during our trip, but we went past it many times. It looked amazing but we never found the time to go n for a massage or treatment. :-( Due to having trips pre-booked we didn't use the tour booking person at the hotel. Their prices looked good though, much cheaper than holiday companies. We did use the taxi service though to go to Bang Niang market one night. It was 500baht for the round trip which we thought was pretty reasonable. It's about 4 (ish) miles away so if you're planning on walking it, you will sweat! The taxi was right outside the hotel and you pay when you get back so no worries about them not collecting you. We arranged a time to be picked up and off we went. The market was great, lot's of the usual touristy market stuff, with plenty of 'genuine fakes'. There was a lot of street food stalls too and bubble tea carts which we loved. Drinks out and about are slightly cheaper than the hotel mini bar prices too. The hotel is some distance from any kind of shopping or tourist area although there are a couple of shops and restaurants on the road down from the main road. As many others have mentioned, the elephant sanctuary next door was amazing too. It was 200 baht for entry and a small basket of either bananas or sugar cane to feed them. Another basket is 100 baht. They also offer packages where you can walk/bathe the elephants too but we only fed them. They were well looked after and the staff will help you with pictures etc. They deserve any tip you give them and are really grateful for them. The baby elephant was really friendly, and due to it's cuteness got most of our basket goodies... We never went in Memories beach bar as it was closed for the season when we were there. It looked nice though, would have been great for a sunset cocktail on the beach. Overrall, this was a great hotel and we had no issues. The staff were great, the food was excellent and the room was really well cleaned and maintained. We would have no hesitation in returning here when we go back to Thailand. Thanks Apsara, keep up the excellent work!

Wish I could rate higher than 5 stars!

I have just, very sadly, just finished a two week stay at Apsara beachfront resort and villa! I have been lucky enough to have many holidays and travel around the world with my family, but can honestly say this is the best holiday I have ever had. Firstly I would like to say the cleanliness of this hotel is impeccable. They pride themselves on recycling and cleaning the beaches free of plastic. This is something I’ve never seen in any other hotels I’ve stayed at, and you can even join in in cleaning the beach and sea if you would like. The rooms are spotless, and again focusing on going green, they will only change the beds and towels if you put a small sign out which is provided. I think this is so brilliant to be more efficient and helpful towards going green. Secondly has to be the staff, the staff here are on another level of amazing. They literally cannot do enough for you, they are so attentive and genuinely kind it is admirable and some brits could definitely take a leaf out of their book!! I made such a good friend with a lovely waitress called Nuk and my experience wouldn’t have been the same without her. Also Ram in the Zeus restaurant, he works so so hard and has ensured we would never go without or have a bad experience in any of the restaurants on site. He looks after his staff too which is almost rare to see in all inclusive resorts like this. Also the receptionist, Yuni, is so wonderful. Every time we had any queries or issues (such as mosquito bites or being locked out the safe) she was literally there immediately to help, such a kind lady with brilliant English!!! Thirdly, the location is just amazing. It’s in such a beautiful town with so much to see, such as markets, a beautiful temple and is literally right on the beach. There’s nothing I would change about the location or staff or food or anything like that. We have been in July and only had one cloudy day and three showers all lasting about 10 minutes each so don’t be put off that it’s off season at this time of year. The only thing I would say, which is literally nothing to do with the hotel is the mosquitos are out 24/7 in full force! And no sprays from the UK work, so when you arrive, you can either go to Kao Lak pharmacy or the hotel shop and buy some tiger balm, this takes the sting out almost immediately and stops itching! If you put this on every night before going for dinner you should be okay. Honestly do not want to go home, so sad to leave and will be back as soon as possible. Thank you to all the staff at Apsara, including those I’ve mentioned and also Kathin, Gandhi, and literally so many others. You’ve given me a holiday of a lifetime.
