The Naka Island Resort and Spa

Exclusive Boutique Resort on Secluded Island

The Naka Island is an exclusive resort on Naka Yai Island, located just off the Phuket coast, accessible only by speedboat.  This boutique resort is a peaceful hideaway where you can spend time alone, or join in with one of the complimentary classes that take place each day.

The pool villas are positioned for upmost privacy. The bathroom or rather, the outdoor bath is the pièce de résistance. A covered walkway edged with tropical plants leads out of the bedroom, through to the shower (which also turns into a private steam room at the click of the button) outside and to the sunken bath. Tucked into its own sheltered alcove with in-built shelves for candles at night, it’s quite possibly the most romantic and relaxing bathing experience you’ll ever have.

Wellness is taken to a new, enticing level with offerings such as a fitness centre in natural jungle surroundings, meditation on a small islet, and boot camp sessions on the beach.

With three dining options available, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to what to eat – but all three come with amazing panoramic seaview’s.

Outstanding

Perth, Australia

A perfect place for a relaxing or romantic holiday. Great facilities, a private villa with your own pool (I recommend you get a Seaview villa as the views are awesome). Friendly, professional staff who provide a high level of service. Some excellent dining options are available and are reasonably priced. Really enjoyed the free daily cocktail!

Good but not perfect

Chicago, Illinois

The basics: This hotel basically has a few standard rooms and mostly "suites" (villas with their own private pool, lounge area etc). If you have elite status you have a good chance of an upgrade. We got villa 54, with a view of the ocean. TL:DR Recommendation: Would recommend this resort if you value being away from it all. Additionally, only recommended if you either have Marriott Elite status OR you don't mind paying $300+/couple per day for food. The pros: 1. The grounds: looks amazing and manicured. We honestly enjoyed just walking around and admiring their gardens. 2. The villa looks. The villas are extremely large, with a giant bedroom, separate outdoor shower and bathtub, private swimming pool. Awesome. Looks like a postcard example of a tropical paradise. This is the peak of luxury you can find in a resort, that's for sure. 3. The staff: these people are super super nice. They cater to your every desire, and always have a welcoming smile. 4. Included in the rate is the transfer by speedboat for arrival/departure. 5. They supply unlimited free bottled water, free ice cream 2-5 pm and 2-for-1 cocktails for happy hour 4-5 pm. They also supply unlimited bug spray (trust me you need it). The cons: 1. Mosquitos. As it is an island surrounded by water, this place has more mosquitos than average even for Phuket. They also only proactively light the mosquito coils in the common places - they do not light mosquito coils throughout the villa with turndown service like other resorts we have visited. They also DON'T TELL YOU that this is not done. We got 4 mosquito bites brushing our teeth upon arrival. You can ask for coils and light them yourself. 2. Prices for food and drinks. Breakfast is not included for standard bookings (or bookings with Marriott points) and only awarded for free with Marriott Platinum status or above. Everything is really expensive. Cheapest dish at the restaurant was 600 Baht/$20 (pasta) and it went up to 3000 Baht/$100 for seafood dishes (steak is even more). Prepare to spend over $300 a day per couple for 3 meals, with no alcohol. Since breakfast is buffet, may be able to get away with just brunch (closes at 11 am) and dinner. 3. Villa "functionality". The villas have some design quirks: there are total 22 light switches (I counted) and they are not labeled well. The master on/off switch also turns off the AC (who thought of that???). Half the time I was walking around back and forth trying to figure out how to turn lights on or off. Also, there are no mirrors indoors. For ladies wanting to put on makeup, you need to do it in the Southern Thailand heat. 4. The beach, to put it simply, sucks. It is not actually maintained by the resort such that it is only white sand. There are rocks and sea shells everywhere. More like a public beach. 5. Pool is just ok. Kind of small considering the size of the resort, but because most people have private pools the main pool gets little use. 6. Critters. I view this as a pro because I like animals, but others may view it as a con. You are in the rain forest. The island has many birds (including the giant great hornbill - the size of a large turkey), monitor lizards that grow up to 4 feet and loved to bathe in our private pool, and playful monkeys. There are cute geckos everywhere on the walls. They are the biggest pro (they eat mosquitos) 7. Very secluded. Some may view as a pro. You will have to a pay a minimum of 700 Baht each way from the airport to the marina, and from there going anywhere in Phuket town requires an expensive taxi (1000+ Baht). Other things to consider: 1. If you have Marriott elite status, you will get a free round trip boat ride to the mainland per day (otherwise you pay $$, or take the once-a-day prescheduled "shuttle"). Elite status also gives you a 15% discount on food and beverage. 2. While the hotel food is very expensive, you can get around it. Just a 10 min walk through the jungle is the Naka Palm restaurant in a local village (AMAZING!). You can also eat at the Port of Call restaurant in the Marina before taking the boat to the resort. Both are affordable (<$20 per person) and very good. If you have Marriott Platinum status or above, you can avoid the resort food entirely by eating the free breakfast at the resort and the rest of the meals at the Naka Palm. If you really wanna save yourself the $100 a day or so for breakfast, you can stop by 7/11 on your way from the airport and buy some stuff to eat in your room for breakfast.
