A joy for wildlife lovers

Basingstoke, United Kingdom

Arriving after dark, I was somewhat unnerved at just how open the accommodation was. There are no windows between the kitchen / living area and the outside world. Creatures can (and do) come in. But so does the sound of the sea and the fresh air and a sense of joy and relaxation. I very soon got used to the bat that hung from the ceiling, the little banaquit bird that swooped around while I was cooking and the cat who patrolled the area like she owned the place. Putting sliced bananas in the bird feeder and on top of the railings encouraged beautiful tanagers and mot mots to visit as well as some impressive lizards and a solitary agouti. It was a joy just to sit and watch the natural world trundle past. The cockerel got a bit annoying but did wake me up in time for the 9am yoga class each morning which was a definite benefit. Everything is built into the side of a mountain - so get used to steps and steep slopes. There are some shops in Castara offering basic foodstuffs like pasta, rice and some fruit and vegetables. It is quite possible to self-cater for your stay - the kitchen is very well equipped - but you may want to bring some items with you like decent tea, fancy oil and vinegar, cheese etc .

Wonderful

We were not sure what to expect, but found Castara Retreats to be a real home-from-home. This is not a 5* hotel, as does not pretend to be, some of the decor is a little rough around the edges, but nothing to get worked up about. I think you need to embrace the concept - which is all about eco-tourism and engaging with the local community. The staff were so welcoming, warm and friendly, that we quickly felt comfortable and settled there. We adored our lodge and enjoyed watching the tropical birds on the feeder, the local chickens and shy little agouti wandering through. Porridge, Jeanell and the her ladies could not do enough for us. The extra services they offered - such as laundry and delicious home-baked bread, we could purchase, was a lovely touch. Porridge sought us out most days, just to check we had everything we needed and arranged some fabulous trips (rainforest and Little Tobago birdwatching) at the drop of a hat. He is a true people person and seemed to know everyone in the village and, indeed, across the island. We were there over Christmas and it was just the tonic we needed. The 4-course meal in the Caribbean Kitchen was sublime as were the sunset views across the bay. We went along to the open yoga session with Judha on day one and we’re completely hooked. She had such a warm and laid back personality and her openness and desire to help all attendees, in every way possible, just shone through. We would not hesitate to recommend and would return.
