Must Stay At Beaches!

Hendersonville, Tennessee

Beaches Is An All Inclusive Family Resort, With Tons Of Pools And Bars Including A Kids Swim Up Bar. There Are Four Villages/Villas The Caribbean And Seaside, The French, The Key West And The Italian Villages. All Of Them Have There Own Pool And All Are Very Nice. Beaches Has There Own Beach Access And Chair Service. There Are 21 Resteraunts, And I Would Highly Recommend The Schooners (Caribbean Village) And The Japanese Style Resteraunt (French Village) There Is A Huge Waterpark With Tons Of Slides And A Lazy River For The Kids, And In The Resort There Is Someone Who Will Take Your Photos On The Beach For You. And When Your time Comes To An End There Is A Departure Lounge In The French Village That Will Take You In A Shuttle To The Airport. Will Highly Recommend Beaches Turks And Caicos Resort Villages And Spa, It Is A Great Family Friendly Experience That The Memories Will Last A Lifetime.

Ultimate Weekend Getaway

I was invited to attend Beaches Social Media on the Sand which is an invitation-only social media conference hosted by Beaches All-Inclusive Family Resort. I rounded up my family which included my hubby, daughter’s, and my mom whom is 74 years old and we took the vacation of a lifetime to one of the Best All-Inclusive Resorts for families with teenagers. My family stayed in The Caribbean Village. We had adjoining rooms for my daughters and mom. One room was a king and the adjoining room had two double beds plus a sofa bed. The mattress, sheets, and pillows were extremely comfortable and the rooms were very spacious. The balcony gave us a great view of the huge chess board and basketball court. The staff was extremely pleasant and they knew all of our names and addressed us each time they saw us. This was my mom's first time out of the country and the staff made her feel very comfortable. One of the best things about staying at all inclusive is just that it’s all-inclusive. Airport transfers are included in a stay at Beaches Turks & Caicos. The airport (Providenciales) is about a 10 to 15-minute drive to the resort. Beaches Turks & Caicos touts itself as ‘luxury included’ with no tipping, no bill-signing, and my favorite no wristbands because those wristbands are so annoying! Beaches Resort is the best family resort in Turks and Caicos because of the quality of service from the cocktails, to the premium alcohol, delicious food and the high standard of hospitality. I was amazed at how the staff knew my family name and went out of their way to make us feel special.

No longer the Beaches I used to know and love

We visited Beaches T&C July 3- July 10, 2019. This was our second time traveling to Beaches during the 4th of July holiday week; in previous years (2010-2016) we have visited the resort 7 times in either Nov. or in Feb., with one of the Nov. visits being the week of Thanksgiving 2016. On this trip, we stayed in a Concierge Caribbean suite – our room was in the 800s, close to the Treasure Beach area. Beaches has been a sentimental favorite of ours, but after this most recent stay I think we have outgrown that sentimentality. We’ve been taking trips here since our daughter was almost 2, and in fact she turned 10 during our trip this year. I am disappointed to write a negative review of a place that I have historically really loved, but here we are. We did enjoy the beach and ocean. The weather was pretty spectacular, and there were a few days during our trip when we were able to get out on the 30-min snorkel that the resort offers. Several times the snorkel trips were canceled due to the current and/or wind. We expected the resort to be very crowded, and it was. The swimming pools were unsanitary and gross. They didn’t look like they were skimmed or vacuumed on any type of regular schedule. The resort serves food that is edible, but the quality of the food and food service have gone downhill since we started traveling here years ago. The experience of eating at the resort has also changed – it’s no longer pleasant because the eating surfaces are not clean and the wait staff is clearly unhappy. While the resort’s grounds are beautiful, the common area facilities leave a lot to be desired. They are nice and appealing from a distance, but most of the common areas need to be power washed and sanitized. Beaches used to boast a really friendly staff, or one that was at least welcoming. There were definitely some good and friendly encounters with the occasional staff member, but overall, I felt like the staff needs to be re-inspired to welcome guests and help them enjoy their vacations. The night before our departure, our 10-year old started feeling ill. I chalked it up to her being tired and hot, and on our departure day I thought she was dragging because the shuttle ride to the airport was stuffy, etc. By the time we got into the airport, it was clear she was very sick. By the time we departed, she was vomiting and developed a high fever. This was July 10. It is July 15 and she has since been to the doctor twice and has a virus that has left her with a prolonged fever, vomiting, ear infection, and rash (she was also tested for strep, which came back negative). Instead of leaving Beaches relaxed and with anticipation to return again, we left with a Beaches virus and no desire to return whatsoever. Below are some other details if you have desire and/or time to read on. Concierge: Not sure what the purpose of the concierge is. I think if you are going to make any dinner reservations where they are permitted, then perhaps this is the main purpose that they serve. Upon arrival, concierge asked us if we were celebrating anything during our trip and we said our daughter’s birthday would be during our stay. There was no follow up to that from them. As it turns out, I did go back and talk to them and they offer an assortment of birthday packages. I would have expected them to be more helpful with this upon our arrival. When we arrived, we were the only guests checking in, so they were not busy with other guests at the time. They didn’t ask us if we wanted to make reservations for dining or anything else. Having booked a concierge room on previous trips, I knew to ask them if we could reserve spots on the snorkel trips. They are stingy with that black binder that holds reservations for the snorkel trips that are included with the stay. After haggling with the concierge staff, I was able to reserve spots for July 5 and July 6; they wouldn’t reserve more than 2 days for me, even though they had pages in there for multiple more days and there were names on them, and they weren’t full. I have overheard other people who have been able to book snorkels for their entire stays in one sitting through the concierge so I would call this concierge service “hit or miss”. Despite the fact that they canceled a number of the snorkel outings, the concierge didn’t make any effort to let us know about the cancelations, including 2 days when the boat didn’t go out at all. I know there are last minute boat cancelations and it would be unreasonable for the concierge to try to track us down; what I am talking about here is the boat is docked and not going out at all and they know the afternoon snorkels are canceled, yet we still have to show up for the snorkel and then be told “oh the boat is not operating today due to the current”, which is a pain. Two days before our departure, I asked for a late checkout (11:30 or 12 instead of 11AM). They told me that they would consider it and get back to me by 9AM the day of our departure. We didn’t hear from anyone and when I went by the concierge desk around 10:15, the associate looked in some green book and said we could stay in the room until 11:30. The process of communicating with the concierge is not very effective. Room/Accommodations: While the room was somewhat outdated and is in need of a makeover, we were pleased with its location and in the accommodations in general. The room was clean, and the AC worked fine, although it rattled quite a bit on and off throughout the night. There was a trundle bed in one room with the kitchenette, and then a king bed and bathroom in the second room. The outdoor deck space was great, with a super view of the beach and ocean. We could also see the basketball courts and the Arizona pool area. Our room was serviced very well– cleaned while we were out during the day, with turn down service each night except our last night. The Wi-Fi service was pretty spotty, at least at night when we were in the room. Service: Beaches isn’t the super friendly place I remembered it to be. It even seemed friendly when we visited in July 2018, but this year was a different story. I am not saying that all employees were necessarily rude, but pretty much everyone seemed worn down, exasperated, unfriendly, and not happy to be there. I was really surprised at how the overall feeling of friendliness is absent from many of the employees’ attitudes. On two occasions I overheard two different groups of employees saying they were counting the days until September, when they would have month off. One employee who said, “only two more months of this” was reminded by another employee, “no, it’s more than 2 months away”. It’s just not as welcoming as it used to be. At Arizona’s lunch buffet area, there is a hostess who would accost you with hand sanitizer when you check in for seating. Yet, they are wiping tables there with dirty rags and seagulls are attacking the food on the tables, and people are picking up food from the buffet with their hands after they’ve already been eating. The aggressive approach with hand sanitizer isn’t really a pleasant experience and isn’t necessarily stopping the spread of germs (and this approach of requiring hand sanitizer bath upon checking in for seating isn’t applied across the other dining facilities). One of the more fun places to stop into used to be Bobby D’s. Our daughter loves it because…cotton candy. But what happened to all of those fun friendly people who used to work there? Grounds: The grounds are beautiful, with lush and vibrant flowering trees and other really gorgeous plantings. But, get out of the way or you’ll get run over by a golf cart or one of those bicycles that employees ride. t’s obviously a major undertaking to keep the grounds looking as beautiful as they are, and it’s certainly easier for employees to get around on their carts and bikes, but they are everywhere and I feel like I had to be more careful to get out of the way all the time. The paths and walkways are pretty much full of non-guest bike and golf cart traffic. Ambiance: We came on this trip to have a fun time. We are an active family and while we like to relax, we also love to swim in the ocean and in the pools. We also love the availability of the brief snorkel trips. Beaches no longer feels like a place to relax and being active and having fun in the pools or the oceans now means doing so surrounded by lots and lots of other people. The high guest count is not really a surprise, but the rowdiness factor this trip was pretty shocking. There used to be families with a lot of younger children, including infants, with them. People are growing up and older and now it seems the families in attendance have more teenagers and fewer toddlers. Of course, Beaches wants to appeal to all of the age groups, but I found the crowds (not just the teenagers) to be way rowdier than in previous years. One example - July 6 at the Iguana’s pool, there was a supervised volleyball match where a Beaches employee organized a large group into two teams to play water volleyball and the Beaches employee kept score. The large group appeared to be at the resort together. But the game was out of control – the guests on the two teams were arguing with each other aggressively and dropping f-bombs left and right. I’m not talking friendly competition or even focused serious competition – this was almost like a brawl. A father told his teen daughter that she “sucked” at volleyball and threw the ball at her, the daughter threw the ball back to the father and it hit the water, so the water splashed in his face. HE HIT HER. He hit her, open palm hard smack across the face. It was awful and the teen girl was upset. The Beaches employee did nothing and the group carried on their raucous game, shouting expletives and trying to 6-pack one another with the ball. It was not a good scene and I was mortified that hitting someone across the face regardless of their relationship to one another didn’t warrant a call to security. We went on the Kitty Kat Beaches charter one morning (which by the way, the stops the charter boat makes were so great – we were able to do an amazing snorkel out on a bigger part of the reef, and we visited iguana island while the tide was out and it was fantastic) – however, the teens and early 20s on the boat with their parents were chugging alcohol from the bar and screaming the lyrics to songs that were playing, adding in really foul language, like they were in the privacy of their own home. I remember my first drink too and I get it – this is life and they are out to party, but it’s like 10:45AM and the kids screaming “#$ck b$%ch”, etc. by the DJ and the bar area was over the top. It was not really the family environment we have been used to in previous years at Beaches. Pools: We spent most of our time at the beach, but the majority of our pool time on this trip was at the Iguana pool and the pool at Arizona’s. We did go to the lazy river/pirate’s island area, and also the French pool. And we spent a very short amount of time in the Italian pool. On the positive side, there don’t seem to be towel availability problems anymore. This used to be an issue – but on this trip, we never had a problem finding towels. Finding a chair at the Italian Pool and at the lazy river area were pretty impossible. We were able to find chairs at the other pools by getting out there early. With the exception of the French pool, none of the pools were even remotely clean. Even getting in first thing in the morning before anyone else was in the pool, it didn’t appear that the pools had been skimmed or vacuumed. I always expect to see some natural debris in the water from the trees/grounds. This trip, the pools were a gross soup of hair ties, clumps of hair, band aids, tissues, straws, other unidentifiable paper items, limes, cups from the bar, a chicken wing in the Arizona’s pool, and my favorite, the pork ribs in the Arizona’s pool. That is just a list of the things I was able to see in the pool; I can only imagine the bodily fluids I could not see. The pools do not look or feel sanitary at all. The Iguana pool and Arizona’s pool are both also in need of some repairs. The coping is breaking off in some places and there are small rocks and pieces of tile and other parts of the pool that are sitting on the bottom of the pools. Most people do not clean up after themselves at the pools. I guess because people are on vacation and they are lazy so they don’t want to bring their used cups back to the bar?? Since Beaches doesn’t offer a consistent pool-side beverage service (most of the pools have swim up or walk up bars), people just let their cups pile up. They leave them at their chairs or on the side of the pool, where they end up making their way into the water. Beaches could improve this by perhaps putting some sort of receptacle for the used bar cups in a location convenient for guests to return them. Otherwise, Beaches relies on guests to return the cups (which they don’t), or they rely on the lifeguard/watersports person to walk around the pools and pick up cups. Pictures of pool soup included in this post. Beach: Beach is beautiful. We spent most of the time in the area in front of Treasure Beach. The whole beach was very crowded especially closer to the dock area, but the Treasure Beach area in front of the jerk shack was the least crowded. There are still trampolines in the water. One of them is missing the netting/trampoline piece and the yellow plastic circle that encompasses the trampolines are in need of cleaning/upkeep. There is a lot of growth on them that is slick and gross. It doesn’t appear that watersports have a practice of brushing them down daily or even weekly, and it appears that they leave them out in the water 24/7 rather than bringing them in at night and then returning them back to the water in the morning. That might be extra work for someone, but it would help keep them out of the state of disrepair that they are in. Watersports: The snorkel boats have always been one of our favorite things about Beaches. On this trip, I guess due to the wind/currents, we ended up at Palms reef 3 times and Pink Elephant once. We enjoy the watersports staff that run the snorkel boats. They are entertaining, friendly, and patient. Food/Restaurants: I don’t think anyone goes to Beaches expecting a 5-star dining experience, but it used to be that you could give it a star. The food is edible and there is a wide variety of it. We ate at a number of different spots at the resort. We found that if we ate breakfast before 8:15AM that the breakfast buffets were not as gross as they are after 8:30AM. Part of the gross factor is that the buffet area and serving utensils aren’t kept tidied, restocked, or cleaned. The balance of the gross factor is just the quantity of people that attend the buffet and all that goes along with that. At the Reflections buffet, they have an employee with food safety gloves handing out the plates that are at the far end of the hot buffet area, but other plates near the pastry products, bowls near the cereal, and other various dishes are out in the open with people taking plates and then returning them to the stack after they’ve changed their mind or already touched them. At Mario’s, there isn’t a gloved plate handler. And, at Arizona’s lunch buffet, there isn’t one either, although on one day there was one handing out the plates that are stacked at the end of the grill area by the lamb/gyro stop. We ate breakfast a la carte at Schooners and Barefoot, once each. Our other breakfasts were either at Reflections or at Mario’s. Mario’s remains a mystery to us – I guess it’s a staffing issue, but they will tell you it’s a 30-minute wait for a table at breakfast when there are only 10-15 tables seated between the outside and indoor seating. Mario’s is large. It is a buffet for breakfast. It doesn’t make sense. The pizzas in general are pretty good, and the sushi is okay too (although they ran out of various sashimi items one night – I think it was July 9). The Paris café seems understaffed for the number of people who go in there for desserts and coffee drinks at night. Overall the food service is inconsistent. For example, Arizona’s lunch buffet – it opens for lunch, but then nothing is ready to be served. Not even basics like chicken nuggets, which are obviously frozen then baked. If food isn’t ready to be served, then maybe they should open later or prep sooner. Wait times for pizzas can be anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Some places open for lunch at 12:30, or maybe they are not open at all (Cricketers had no signage on it and we couldn’t figure out if it would open or not – we tried to go here for lunch on our departure day July 10, but it was closed I guess). There are large containers of hand sanitizer at the host stand at each restaurant, and as I mentioned before, the host is almost militant in her approach to making you take a squirt on your hand as you put your name on the list to be seated. This doesn’t happen at any of the other dining establishments, and it is bizarre. And, the reality is hand sanitizer is really meant for use in conjunction with hand washing and already clean hands. If you put hand sanitizer on dirty hands, it is somewhat pointless. Also, you have to use enough hand sanitizer on your entire hand and even nail beds in order for it to be effective. The tiny squirt on your hand and rubbing your palms together is just…whatever!! Cleanliness: The resort is beautiful on the surface. But otherwise, it needs a deep clean. For example, if you are going to Beaches and you decide to eat at Mario’s, Soy Sushi, Neptune’s, Arizona’s or anywhere that has a non-picnic table top – just look at the table itself and then put your hands on it. Your hands will stick to the table. The tables are not clean. They are sticky and dirty. They may have been wiped off, but those tables have not been scrubbed down or sprayed with a disinfectant in a long time. The Soy Sushi tables are white – but if you look at them, they have a coat of gray/black grease grime built up on them. If you sit down for a meal, you will notice that the only thing that really happens between you finishing your meal and the next family to sit down at the same table is that the tableware gets swapped out. The tables are barely wiped. And sometimes, an extra place setting is left at the table (we are a party of 3 for example and oftentimes a fourth place setting was left at the table) – that same extra place setting sits there the whole time you are eating and is left there for the next party to use even though you might have sneezed or touched the glass that is left there at the table. It is not sanitary at all. Management needs to pay more attention to the dining facilities. I think if it takes a few minutes to sanitize the tables between guests, it’s totally worth it. Every surface is sticky. If you want a fun science experiment, go pull the door open at Bobby D’s and tell me what is on the door? Is it glue? Goo? Boogers? What is it? This leads me back to all the giant containers of hand sanitizer at the resort. This is a joke. The hand sanitizer doesn’t keep the resort clean – it’s a band-aid on a gushing wound and is really doing nothing to prevent germs from spreading. Beaches can’t police guests urinating in the pool or spitting in the pool or swimming in the pool with cuts that are open or any number of other things, so they’ve chosen the whole hand sanitizer approach to make it seem like things are clean. It doesn’t work! If the resort is closing for maintenance this September, they would benefit from some sort of sanitation specialist - someone who can help them understand that they can’t force the guests to be hygienic and they will have to take other measures to ensure they keep all of the surfaces, etc. as clean as possible.
