Come for views and golf, but don’t stay

Chicago, Illinois

My daughter and I joined my husband at The Lodge for the weekend. He was golfing Pebble Beach for a few days with some friends. Since my daughter would be with us my husband booked what they described to be the larger “suites” online. Little did we know that these rooms, although they cost a few hundred more a night than the ones our friends booked, have not been updated EVER. This IS NOT a five star hotel. Their rating should be taking down two stars. They should be ashamed that they book these rooms out without a warning about how outdated they are. I travel all the time, and this was one of the worst rooms I have ever stayed in. I have stayed in better Two and Three Star Hotels then this. First of all, there is no HVAC. It is completely broken, and has been for years! Instead, they leave a wobbly portable fan for you to set up for you in your room. And, of course, we were there on the two hottest days of the year: our room was 89 degrees. It would have been nice to keep a window or door open, but you can’t because there are no screens. So your choice is little gnats and flies (or maybe even a sea coast bat) and cigar smoke from the people puffing then right below your room, or sweat to death. Secondly, the bathrooms have not been updated in decades. There is peeling wallpaper, a cheap old American Standard toilet (and no, wrapping a roll of toilet paper in a pretty bow on top does not make the toilet look better) that barely flushes, an old wall phone from the 1980s, and a shower that barely works. Our shower head was literally falling out of the wall, had no water pressure, and jumped from hot to cold and back to hot again. Twice I almost got burned by the change in pressure and temperature. Oh, there is also one of those old turn knows on the wall for a heat lamp LOL. Our closet door was broken and wouldn’t close properly, and the drawers were musty and had old stains in them. Finally, the room itself is a let down. The king bed was absolutely terrible. It was like sleeping on an old cardboard box. The rollaway bed they gave my daughter was extremely old and thin. They have better rollaways beds at the Courtyard Marriott. Also, the fireplaces are being refurbished and do not currently work. I would love to say that the food makes up for the horrible room, but it didn’t. The clam chowder was the worst I have ever had (more celery than clams)... and they charge you $20 for a bowl. The service at both the pool and the restaurant was very slow, and not up to Five Star standards. I ordered a cheese quesadilla at the pool and got a chicken and veggie one instead. I had to ask for water at the restaurant three times. It also took over twenty minutes to get a Tiramisu, which was obviously taken out of the fridge in the little dish it was served in (must have been a long walk from the kitchen). Come for the golf and the scenery, but don’t waste your money. Stay somewhere else.

Excellent Rooms; Remarkable Location

Palo Alto, California

This is the iconic hotel on the Pebble Beach Peninsula. At a base rate of $390/night (event rate), it feels like a bargain. Of course, there are rooms with significantly different views and traffic noise, but the location is superb. Service is excellent. Highly recommended.
