Weekend Getaway

Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort is a great place for a leisurely getaway. The pools are fantastic and the lazy river is a huge plus. The food at the resort was pretty good, there were lots of choices and reasonably priced.

We wanted to like it...

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

We had an unexpected night in the area, and wanted both some fun and some rest for our family. We have stayed at portofino bay and royal pacific in the past, and we called universal reservations, who recommended we try Cabana Bay this trip. The agent on the phone talked up the lazy river for fun and comfy rooms for a good night’s sleep. We took their recommendation, and it ended up being a bit of a disappointment for us. There were some pros for us - availability of food choices (particularly quick service, which we haven’t found at some of the other Universal hotels), proximity to Volcano Bay, the pools were nice and had a good bit of seating around them. Then there were some cons - the super long and slow check in line (though the employee who actually checked us in was very friendly), difficulty finding parking anywhere in the area designated for our room, the intertube situation at the lazy river, and the poolside music. Let me explain - the hotel has an awesome lazy river, but you must purchase your own intertube to use at it. The floats available onsite are expensive, particularly for the quality, and the employee who talked up the lazy river before we booked as to why we should stay at cabana bay never mentioned this fact, which would have affected our decision to stay there, or we would’ve brought our own floats. Secondly, we paid a premium for a pool view room, which was talked up to us on the phone, when I specifically mentioned needing rest. I understand there may be some guest noise during pool hours, but I didn’t plan on the hotel itself playing loud poolside music until 11pm and beginning again at 7 something am. It kept our children up at night and woke them up in the morning. If you don’t mind the noise, it’s not an issue, but I would’ve preferred a lesser view and cheaper price for more sleep. The hotel does have a fun retro vibe, and may be great depending on one’s preferences, but we will stay elsewhere on future trips to Universal Orlando.
