California’s Central Coast is well known for its rugged charms. It’s home to some of the west coast’s most beautiful scenery, including the famous Big Sur.

Along the Central California Coast you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get out of your car and explore. The wide roads are ideal for easy driving, and you can take in stunning views on either side of you. To one side are the dramatic cliffs, white sandy beaches and glittering seas of the Pacific coast. On the other are the wide open farmlands and luscious interiors of California.

Stop off to relax on white sandy beaches, where you can walk for hours and take to the waters for a quick dip. In local seaside towns you’ll find melt in the mouth seafood dishes, while the countryside gives way to vineyards where you can enjoy a delicious tipple. There are more difficult cliff walks, and opportunities to feed tame squirrels who sit in the car parks waiting for visitors.

Explore San Francisco’s steep streets by foot or by tram. It’s home to some excellent restaurants and trendy coffee shops which feed the glamorous residents. You’ll also find unique architecture, with tall houses lining the sloping streets and looking out over the river below.

Spend time taking in some of San Francisco’s top sights. The Golden Gate Bridge is a must and can be driven or cycled over for beautiful views and an iconic picture. Head to the other side and make the most of National Parks and plenty of opportunities to explore the USA’s natural landscapes. A visit to Alcatraz offers incredible views of the city from the boat as you cross. You’ll also find a fascinating history to be discovered in this former prison, where Al Capone and The Birdman were famously incarcerated.

San Francisco is also a great place for foodies. It’s home to pretty waterside eateries, trendier restaurants in its steep streets and fresh produce which can be picked up from the markets.

Spend your days taking to a hiking trail, on your own or with a guide and explore the secrets of this vast park. You’re bound to stumble on spectacular views, glittering lakes, thundering waterfalls and more along the way. Yosemite Valley is known as having some of the best views in the park. Look through Tunnel View and admire El Capitan, the Half Dome and Bridalveil Falls.

Spend a day in the crystal clear waters of Tenaya Lake. It’s fed from the fresh ice and snow from the mountains above and offers a chance to cool off as you admire the luscious surroundings. Book a kayak and explore the lake further, or simply lie back and soak up the warm Californian sunshine.
