Lovely, lovely

Rhode Island

This place is gorgeous. I was here for a brief business trip but would have stayed far longer had I known the details of where I was staying. The room (10th floor) was enormous and well laid out (all of the upgrades you would expect) and the bed was absurdly comfortable. The house staff swarm the first floor and will attend to any need. Room service was like lightening and the food array was creative and tasty. I’m ready to return.

Historic, beautiful, but haphazard service.

Rockville, Maryland

Bellmen/valets greeted us promptly and took our bags from the taxi. Front desk was nice and efficient. Welcomed us as Marriott members. Gave us an "upgrade" to a suite. Bellman spent time showing us all the room features. We unpacked, then realized that not only was the view of a concrete wall (it felt like underground, even on the third floor), but the room was pulsating to drum and band music. We never found out where it came from, but went immediately to the front desk where we were quickly assigned another suite--a corner room on the 6th floor. Again, the bellman was extremely helpful in shifting us with all our clothing already on hangers. The room was quite nice and spacious. It overlooked the park, which is a haven for the homeless. The shower was excellent. Pros: Beautiful lobby with coffee urns in the morning and water throughout the day. Location on the edge of the tourist district--less noise. Staff friendly and helpful throughout. Room service staff was lovely; breakfast was punctual and the food was good and not as overpriced as many fancy hotels are. Linens and towels are good. Cons: Nothing really bad, just a lot of haphazard things. Three nights we got no turndown service so we got no door-hanger breakfast cards and each night they had to send someone up with one. By the end of the week neither the turndown ladies nor the front desk could find one. The front desk person whom I called each evening sounded very embarrassed and gave us a breakfast credit as an apology. One day we got no maid service at all. Towel and bathmat replacement was haphazard--different each day. Service at the lobby restaurant was fine one lunch then very slow the next morning at breakfast with about the same number of servers and customers. When you check in, you don't get a key to the mini-bar. You have to call to ask and then someone brings it up. Could save a lot of trips by offering one at check-in. The card that was placed on the bed with the turndown service (on the nights we got it) misspelled "concierge" two different ways! Overall a fine hotel which calls itself "full-service" but doesn't seem to have good systems in place, especially for housekeeping. If the housekeepers had iPads to keep track of the rooms done and undone, it would be much less likely rooms would be missed and things would be done in a more standard way. Texans love to over air-condition. The meeting room was freezing. I had to go back and put on long pants and a long sleeve shirt. Several people wore sweaters or jackets. Even after complaints led to them turning it up some, it was still awfully cold. If you plan to sit in the lobby or in a meeting room, don't wear shorts. When we left, the valet said he'd call us a cab, but then forgot to until I reminded him. The day before when I asked about a cab I was told I should call an Uber. The different valets seemed to have different opinions about cab service. Again, that is something that should be standardized.
