Great Views But That's All Folks

Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

After staying at the Amangiri in Utah, we couldn't wait to try Amangani in Jackson Hole. Located mountainside and 12 minutes from downtown, Amangani affords splendid views of all three main mountain ranges. All rooms have the same views except for our signature suite that had sweeping views front and side. Alas the property is 20 years old and certainly does not live up to the Aman reputation. Instead of stone and wood throughout, most of the public spaces have hideous carpeting that is stained and downright ugly. Public spaces overall are very small and confining. With the same 40 suites as Amangiri, you wonder how all the differences can come from the same ownership. Our suite was very nice but pillows were flat and outdoor furniture ratty. In fact, the balcony was more than 900 sq. ft. and not even an umbrella or day bed was included. With full sunshine throughout the day it was unusable except in the early morning. Small stall shower with a step down, plenty of closet space and drawers. No fresh fruit on arrival or throughout the stay. In fact, no fresh fruit anywhere on property. They do offer nice turndown amenities including a backpack, mini animal sculpture and chocolates. Restaurant is mediocre at best. Unlike Amangiri, no wood burning oven, no fresh breads, no breakfast bar and no pizzas. There are only 3 decent tables with views, outdoor seating features two very long communal tables and a couple four-tops, all uninviting. There is no bar and all drink prices are double those in town. Spa is basically four treatment rooms. No mani, pedi, hair or waxing services. $240 for a 60-minute massage. Fitness room is basically a room with 4 machines and one was out of order the entire stay. There was a single Peloton but behold, no attachment for regular clips. There is also a yoga room but alas, there was a private class when I was there and could not use it. Highlight is the double length Olympic salt water lap pool. Lounge chairs offer brilliant views. Service is spotty and doesn't start until after 10AM. There were no "Four Seasons" amenities served and in fact, there wasn't any water available unless by request. They arrange private tours of Grand Teton for $175 per hour but best bet is to book Toursbylocals and if lucky, get Aaron. He charges about $100 per hour for an 8 hour tour that is fab. Overall: Four Seasons located at Teton Village offers pristine views of Jackson Hole resort and mountain along with a few shops and restaurants. Best bet for winter skiing. The Wort in town features the Silver Dollar Bar and Grill with live music, great drinks and lots of fun. Both are better options than Amangani especially for the prices they charge and ouch, they even add 10% service charge per day. I guess you pay for your turn down amenities and then some.

First class accommodations, service and rooms

Fort Myers, Florida

This was our first experience with an Aman property and it lived up to our high expectations. We loved our room and deck, the interaction with the staff, the public accommodations like the pool and spa, the view and the location which is a 10 minute drive to downtown Jackson. It was a terrific oasis to use as a base to explore Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone during our four night stay. It took some getting used to not having to sign or tip for everything. The service levels are outstanding. By the end of our stay, we did feel quite at home. We went on two private day trips arranged by the hotel: a half day to Teton National Park and a full day to Yellowstone. The 5:30 a.m. start was a bit difficult, but so worth it because the animals are out early. These Amangani guides really know their stuff, and we saw so many animals that we never would have seen on our own because the guides really know where to look and how to read the terrain. I don't know if I will ever make it back to Yellowstone, but I am so glad I got to see all the things I did on our tour. It was expensive, but worth it. We ate dinner one night at the hotel, and enjoyed restaurants in town including Snake River Brewery and Rendezvous. I highly recommend the property.
