Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park – Tours

Tours in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

Think of the Wild West, and the chances are you’re imagining something reminiscent of Monument Valley. The backdrop for countless classic Western films, including Stagecoach, The Searchers and The Eiger Sanction as well as Forrest Gump, this park is brimming with fascinating history and offers spectacular vistas as far as the eye can see.

As part of our 15-day National Parks and Lodges tour, you’ll join an experienced Navajo guide through areas of the park only accessible by 4x4, immersing yourself in historic tales of the Navajo people. Gazing up at monolithic sandstone landmarks, such as the twin buttes affectionately known as the Mittens, the peculiar towering Totem Pole, and the Ear of the Wind arch, you’ll also come across ancient petroglyph drawings, giving you an insight into early Navajo life. Take in awe-inspiring panoramas from the iconic John Ford’s Point Overlook, feel like the last people on Earth as you look out across the horizon, as the park’s vibrant orange, red and yellow hues blaze beneath a breath-taking sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

While there are several hiking trails throughout the park, there is currently only one self-guided hike available in Monument Valley, and this is the Wildcat Trail. This covers around four miles and takes you through some of the park’s most scenic spots, including the Mittens and Merrick Buttes.

The park experiences its busiest periods between May and September – particularly in July and August. You may find slight traffic when driving its scenic loops during this time, and as such we recommend visiting during between late March and April or October. With cooler temperatures and less crowds, visitors in these months enjoy more stable weather and less wind, resulting in the clearest views and less dust.

Our tours through the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park offer accommodation at Goulding’s Lodge. Whether you would prefer to rest in comfort in one of the modern suites or settle down for the night at the Lodge’s campground is up to you.

Home to some of the world’s most photographed geological landmarks, the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park offers truly jaw-dropping scenery, and a wealth of ancestral Navajo history and culture. Step back in time as you reflect on timeless Western classics across its amber-hued backdrops and wander the land John Wayne once described as ‘where God put the West’.
